Hey all,

I was pumping some iron at the gym yesterday and managed to do my neck in , I am guessing poor form. After dosing up on Solpadeine I managed to ride the bike home. It got progressively worse over night so I took a trip to the GP this morning who has given me some Naproxen to take for the next month Sad

He seemed to think its a neck trap strain and to go light on the exercise for a while but currently even with the extra drugs I am feeling like a cripple. It took me nearly 30 mins to work out how to get out of bed Sad

So woe is me.. I have found a couple of light exercise on youtube that seem to give some temporary relief but if anyone has any tips I'm all ears.

I've been suffering the same thing on and off for about almost a year now (though very much not gym related!) - absolutely crippling at it's worst. No real sleep, all movement painful. Had to take a day off because of it at one stage (fortunately only one so far).

Even today when it's relatively fine I can still feel it there, twinging every now and then.

No real advice to give as I've not found anything that really eases it, or even worked out what brings it back on properly. Tried all the recommended things like hot and cold compresses etc (though not yet spoken to a sports therapist or anything).

Good luck, I feel your pain!

I prey for your sake it's not a slipped/ruptured disc and/or trapped nerve

I had this happen a few years back, and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy, i was in agony for months and the Naxproxen barely made a jot of difference, i also lost feeling in 3 of the fingers in my left hand, and constant pins & needles in the other 2

Mine turned out to be caused by a bone spur, thought to be brought on by bad seating posture of all things

Neck exercises helped to a degree, as did physiotherapy, but as with most things like this, it was just giving it time to heal

And they say exercise is good for you! Wink

The only advice I have is be very careful that you don't do something to make it worse. If it is still giving you real pain, go to the hospital A&E or walk in centre, they have much more expertise on hand than a GP.

I tried that but it hurts more to lie down than to sit at my desk so I decided to work from home instead. If I stay completely vertical its a constant ache but not too bad, if I try to bend over or lie down thats when it really stabs.

After further google diagnosis I am pretty sure its a muscle strain although my nephew thought the same regarding his sprained ankle and just had keyhole surgery to reattach the ligaments together.

Looks like I wont be on the bike for at least a week Sad

As your doctor for some Gabapentin and some valium.

When I mullered my back at the gym a year ago (it went pop and I keeled over). The doctor gave me loads of those things.

I also used a traditional Chinese remedy of boiling an egg/rice wrapping it in a hot towel and pressing it against the painful area. You can't really do it yourself as you will instinctively move away from the heat. You need somebody to press it onto the painful area.

Uddermint.
Don't get it too close to your eyes.

My fella gets quite bad shoulder pain, hunched up in the van all day and then a couple of fall injuries that involved loss of tendons, but if I massage this stuff into his shoulder every so often, it gives him a lot of relief.

Smells like Fox's glacier mints.

Depends what you've don I suppose. If it is a 'pull' then Deep Heat, Fiery Jack or similar plus taking it easy is the way to go. If it is more than a 'pull' then a visit to the quack. If the quack can't sort it you may need an x-ray.

I do like the sound of Itchy's ancient Chinese remedy of applying hot food to the area. My preference would be fish and chips with plenty s&v plus ketchup, but I'm guessing a lamb tikka would do just as well...

A Fray Bentos pie and a wank* usually does for me.. Might as well give it a try what's the worst that can happen?

* not a vigorous one mind - that would be foolhardy.

Where on your neck does it hurt? do you have full range of movement?

Across trap, into base of skull, right at spine etc?

What exercise were you doing at the time/before? I'd wager you were (a) lifting too much (b) using bad form (c) a combination of both.

Not sure if all but quite a lot of NHS physio departments you can now self refer to so have a look into that. GP's are very limited in what they know about musculo-skeletal problems, not a criticism just they have to do a lot so can't specialise.

Physio will provide you exercises and a plan to improve movement and stop the injury re-occuring.

Not sure I could stomach a Fray Bentos Very Happy

Movement has started coming back now its just turning to the right or looking down that gives a healthy reminder that something ain't right.

The drugs also seem to actually make a difference now with the pain worse in the morning when I am trying to maneuver out of bed. After sitting at my desk all day it actually hurts less, then the kids get home :/ .

I am off to Belfast on Monday but if it's still bad when I get back I will pull out the work health insurance and get booked in to one of their physios. I've had the health insurance for 10 years and never used it so might as well.

As to how I did it, I was doing Tricep extensions and then it felt some one stabbed me in the neck with a knitting needle. Same weight as I have been lifting for months. I was a bit tired though so likely my form was off and I didn't spend long enough warming up. I'll be booking in for a PT session when I get back in the gym to see if I can work out what went wrong.

You need to work on your mobility/stretching. Go see the physio they will be able to offer the best advice. Make sure it's a good sports physio. Don't do what the PT says unless they're ridiculously qualified/knowledgeable. They probably wont know a great deal.

OP, have you tried swapping to the other hand.

I'm surprised your GP never spotted classic Phap-Induced, 'Tension Neck Syndrome'.

MTFU and get back tae yer work.

Very Happy
