It doesn't bother me any more, because its not a part of my life. I see the stuff, and I see all the people madly rushing about, or sad women with families for whom they feel compelled to buy constantly bigger and better gifts, and feed on a budget - and I understand WHY it has to be that way. And I am glad I do not have to be a component in that madness.
So even though it seems strange, I like my quiet little Christmas with its slow start, peace and quiet, exquisite food and drink that there's no crisis if I don't cook it when I should, and leisurely pace.
Nowadays I like when it first comes out : I am fairly dissociated from the mad rush or the hatred that people go into. I just go my merry little way, buying occasional little pots of exotically flavoured double cream for my coffee, and a few bags of lebkuchen to munch through when other people are eating mince pies (ugh), and I am happy with being given something like a Pandoro which lasts me slightly less than forever to eat. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

Its an Italian cakey bready thing which you dust in icing sugar.
Don't let the fact that it looks like something out of an Indiana Jones movie put you off.
Its very nice with a glass of sauternes (sweet dessert wine) or a cup of tea (the English solution)
If you have visitors coming round, you can cut it into slices across the middle, turn them around 45 degrees, and then ice them into place with butter cream and put strawberries or fruit on the "steps" as you go. Looks quite impressive and ridiculously tasty.
And also if you don't get round to eating all of it in one go, you can dunk it in egg and fry it in butter like French toast.
There's another version called Panettone but it has raisins and fruit peel in, of which I am not a fan.
You can also get some that have chocolate stuff in that is similar to Nutella (again, not a fan) but I like the basic Pandoro, which means "bread of gold" due to its golden colour inside and sweet vanilla-y flavour.

It seems to be the tradition in Brasil.
I remember scoffing about 1/2 of one myself on the drill ship I was on.
No really bothered about it.
Crazy.
It's fine with a cup of tea or coffee too.
A variation on the theme.
