Hi,

I need to start thinking about a new winter jacket. My existing one dates from sometime before 2001 so as well as being worn out I'm hoping there may be some improvements in materials.

It's just for commuting, 30 miles each way with around 3/4 of that being dual carriageway or 60mph single carriageway. I would like to stay dry. I'd prefer removable insulation so I can wear it during wet weather in the summer (saving wear and tear by using my old jacket for most of the summer). I dislike armour, my old jacket had shoulder and elbow pads which I immediately removed.

What sort of money do you reckon I should be budgeting? Any particular products I should look for, or preferred materials or construction?

This is one thing I'm going to by from a real dealer, not by mail order so I want to have some idea before going in for a look.

Thanks,

It depends if you want fancy goretex or not.
Fancy goretex is nice when it is warm but wet.

Myself I bought myself a Weissie jacket after my Hein Gericke one started leaking on the arms.

I went for a fairly cheapo Navada jacket.

I have a very similar sounding commute.

I picked up a second hand IXS goretex jacket for £100 in as-new condition.

It has never let in a drop of water.

Want waterproof? Buy goretex.

My Hein Gericke was goretex and waterproof. My cat made it non water proof on the arms as she liked to climb into the arms Confused

I have one of those. It is a decent all-rounder. Mine has never
leaked. The outer jacket has a mesh liner so it is reasonably
comfortable to wear in hot weather.

Despite the "4 Touring" name, it is much too short to be
a touring jacket.

I have a Weise Pioneer "waterproof" jacket. Rrp £160. It's not waterproof. I get wet arms and water runs in around the zip. The rest of the jacket soaks up a bit of water too so when it goes back on the whole thing is cold and heavy.
When dry it's nice and warm, though.
I'm contemplating getting a cheap waterproof overjacket from some outdoors-type shop.
Next time I'll buy Goretex.

It'll be when the cat has clawed at it, piercing the liner ...

Cats ruined my bike cover, sitting on it and showing how comfortable they are by scratching the crap out of it!

Thanks for the comments. Haven't managed to get round to the dealer yet but will look out Held which I know they carry, and see what else is on the go. Looks like we're talking around £200 to get something of decent quality, does that sound correct?

Only if you don't want waterproof.

Held have a large range of jackets with prices from just over £100 up
to more than £1000 for the airbag version.

The one mentioned earlier in this thread is the '4 Touring'.
For all practical purposes, mine is just as waterproof as Gore-TEX
in the sense that it never leaks. I would hesitate to recommend it
as a long distance touring jacket because it is so short - no longer
than a typical 'sports' jacket. There isn't much point in the jacket
being 100% waterproof if the rain can get in the middle at your waist.

I also have a 5 year old Alpinestars Andes Drystar jacket. It
has been severely tested on many occasions and it has never
let a drop of water in. However, I wouldn't buy another one because
it is just too bloody hot.

I wouldn't be paying £200+ for a non-Gore-TEX jacket. I paid
€170 (around £150) for the Held 4 Touring jacket in the January
sales 2-3 years ago. Thanksgiving is in a few weeks. You might
pick up a bargain in the "Black Friday" sales.
