One thing learners spectacularly fail at is safely merging onto a busy road of moving traffic in a decisive and urgent way with proper acceleration sense.

I learned to drive with the "Stanley Oaks School of Driving", a one-man operation with a 1L Nissan Micra and a big sign on top. The car had done over 250,000 miles and still looked good. It had apparently had to have "a new gearbox", though. First lesson, I got a brief chat, an intro to "how a car works", involving a description of the clutch being "like two dinner plates pressed together" at which I raised an eyebrow, what bits did what, and then we were off! We went up a maze of twisty little estate roads, all alike, and he said "Turn left here". "What!", I cried, dismayed, "that goes onto to the main road!" (a dual carriageway). "Yes," he replied, all smiling and smug, "Let's see how we get on". Chap was bomb-proof. Good fellow too.

You can make learning to drive too complicated, you see. Simple is good.

Just to answer one of the questions that came up - I learnt to drive quite recently (under 2 years ago). But it really was just a formality due to me being a motorbiklist. We didn't have to worry about any of the road type things, controls, etc. It was more about obs. Reversing was new to me too.
I think that if I can get her into the driving seat, knowing what to do to set up seat and mirrors and pulling away & stopping that would be enough to build her confidence enough to get some lessons. We could then practise what she's learnt in the fiat 500 (not my car) in between lessons.

You probably know better than most of us how to get through the modern test then.
Why not ring up the place you learnt and ask their advice, but take it with a pinch of salt.

We all tend to take advice and instruction better from a teacher we are paying.
