pre 78 mk1 golf.

40 yrs old = free tax and since may 2018 they are now also mot exempt, bonus of black silver plates Cool will be going up in money now they are historic status.

you still need to apply for tax and fill in a v112 declaration annually though, first v112 needs to be shown at P.O but subsequent ones can be done online.

I've seen a few dsg golf/ scirocco gti and gtds recently with gearbox failures (mechatronic failure) that vw have refused to fix claiming driver abuse.

The 2.0 gti petrol engines seem to be suffering balance shaft siezures.

And the diesels seem to be suffering dpf blockages and egr falures since the emissions software updates.

Have you though about the mercedes A class range?

I lost a hell of respect for VW when i had my Scirocco GT (petrol), in the 12 months i owned it, it set me back well over £2k in repairs for various problems, a total of 7 trips to the garage in 12 months is not good

Biggest problem being the direct injection fuel injectors, at £200 each, plus fitting, the 1st 2 that went cost me over £500, then a week later a 3rd went, so replaced the other 2 for a total in excess of £1k

Then throttle body went, then throttle pedal, then various other things started going, i ended up doing a bush fix and flogging it to webuyanyshitter.com

Lost about £2k in purchase to selling price too, so lost over £4k in 12 months on an £8.5k Scirocco

On the flip side, i've had my replacement Civic Type S now for 18 months, and it has cost me the total of £75 for an ABS sensor in that time

My Leon is effectively the Golf GTD and had the 1st year service 2 months ago. I can confirm that something was definitely done to the ECU because pre-service it would run a program which would clean the DPF regardless of how hard it had been driven. (When it did that I would feel inadequate because it was telling me I wasn't driving fast enough..)

Now since that 1st service it's definitely not doing as many automatic DPF cleans - probably 80% less. If people are not driving the engine hard then yes less cleans will choke the DPF quickly.
Since they messed with the ECU the only change I can sense is some slight loss in lower revs 'grunt'.

Tittling about with electronics to affect a cars performance is a c*nt's trick and no mistake. It isn't tuning in the traditional sense as far as I'm concerned.

Hmm seem to have wandered off-topic a bit. Has OP tried any of these wise suggestions?
