"Facebook confessed today that buggy code potentially exposed all of its users' accounts to hackers over the past 14 months. It reckons miscreants snooped on least 50 million people's private profiles, and perhaps as much as 90 million."

Bound to happen, the incentive is huge. No 'person' looked up all those accounts without making a single post, big business is behind it.

Admit it..

You just have no friends Big Man.

🤣

Since its conception I've suspected social media to be a risque business. Anything run by anyone is for some form of profit monetary or otherwise.

Anything you submit is up for grabs.

Plugging into the system is all it takes, unless you know how to hide, which is not so straight forward.

Even since 'the new euro online privacy something' where all online business has to declare what it does with your shit, company's rules have simply been adjusted to say 'if you want to join us/use our service/s then you better suck it up'.
All in Internet Legalese of course.

So what has changed really?

I find it sort of fascinating how two of the largest internet companies on earth make their money thorugh nothing other than advertising. Google and Facebook, that is.

Also (sort of off-topic, but relevant to me), given that they're nothng other than massive advertising agencies using humans and computers as billboards, it's funny how people think Facebook and Google being blocked in China is somehow an affront to everything the west stands for.

have you actually jumped through the hoops to opt out of everything on a website?

some have a opt in opt out globally buttons as soon as you navigate to them, others (google included) have menus and sub menu's full of check boxes, external links for individual companies(which also have opt out menus etc) and browser based opt outs that need re doing if you clear your cookies etc.

They are making it hard to opt out on purpose so the average person will just give up and click accept.

if i get a site that tries making me jump though hoops to opt out, I opt out of using said site.

The only option really is having multiple personas and keep them separated with no cross activity.

The button should say can we personalise ads for you and sell you online activity data yes - no?
