Yeah, yeah......
I'm not sure loneliness is altogether new in this age group. While social media has a big role in everyone's lives nowadays, I can remember feeling alone despite hanging out with groups of friends.
Like most girls, I was part of a small clique of 4 girls who spent every spare minute together. It didn't mean we shared everything though. There was still a sense of "aloneness" as hormonal changes struck or boys ignored you
What we didn't have, was the constant need for feedback, "likes" for every outfit, eyebrow, lipstick or dinner. My daughters (19 & 22) are constantly posting, waiting for and counting likes and feeling pressured to "like" other people's postings.
It's a mistake not to accept that we are all alone, the vast majority of the population is indifferent to you and if you believe that everyone is having a better time/sex life/career/holiday/home/pets/friends than you, you're doomed.
Coz you/we are all doomed anyway.
Shit, I was feeling quite cheerful until I started this post.

Yeah, everyone is a victim in modern Snowflake society. If they can't afford 5 pence for a tampon, they're suffering from depression, loneliness, poverty or discrimination of some new sort, invented last week.
I popped around to my sisters yesterday and all 3 nephews spent the entire time when we weren't eating, on separate games consoles, all with headsets on, chatting to their mates.
All that's changed is kids don't go out to socialise, they sit in their bedrooms "chatting" to people online. Not a lot different to adults really.
What are we all doing on here? How often do people sit pratting about on their phone of an evening? Do we all feel victimised and lonely? Some like to feel offended on behalf of others, but come on... ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

All of your post was interesting and insightful (just the right amount of gin ).
Re being doomed. When you realise and think about that all of life and existence is completely pointless (because all forms of energy, including humans, eventually convert to nothing and the whole of human existence is completely pointless) that should be quite an empowering realisation. But for some reason it seems to have the opposite effect (at least for a while), for some reason (presumably related to survival of the species by the survival of our DNA) we need to have meaning and the need to matter.
In the end, it is all pointless and we are all doomed. Doesn't mean we can't have a few laughs in middle
Ahhh Gin'oClock. Highly recommend Malfi - Con Limone
I'm a very late to the party user of social media and some of it boggles my mind and others I can lose hours sat on phone. Over the course of months, thats a lot of non-activity. So previously I'd be thinking about hobbies, walks, places, things that need fixing, family birthdays, learning something new etc
As a teenager in early 90's, would either be lonely, or do something about it, by going out. But with social media now, its path of least resistance, too easy to pick it up and lose some more hours without actually changing anything, or building towards any changes.
Couple that with constantly looking at the new wave of celebs who are just close enough to us to make us believe we are failing because we are not living life like they are.
Celebs before youtube were on a bit of a pedestal, different. Now its someone like you, maybe from your road, but worth millions and looking stunning. If they have done it, why not you.
I just think its even easier now than it was then to feel bad about yourself which isn't helpful for kids growing up. But the same truth is as valid now as then; life isn't fair but if you don't keep trying and learning then you won't move forward, don't beat yourself up, just dust yourself off, learn and move on.
Mmmm. Maybe too much gin now |

I can't resist...
So, I take it you don't like students? Is it because some of them are potential Labour voters, or is it because your grades weren't good enough to get in? ____________________ Now - Speed Triple, old ratty GS550, GSXR750M

I think what makes the difference is if the kid has worked before they leave University. Kids who have worked before getting their first 'proper job' know that money has to be earned. They also know that they are on the bottom of the pile until the next kid comes along... ____________________ Now - Speed Triple, old ratty GS550, GSXR750M

I have 2 teenagers and one 20 year old, and I can confirm that alcohol and A & E visits have featured over the last few years. My daughter is 14 and I can also confirm that I apply double standards when it comes to her nocturnal activities.
The thing is, nothing has changed in this respect from when I was a teenager. Two fundamentals have changed however - social media and drug culture. Back in my day our social media was confined to what you could do in a telephone box, and drugs were rare. Nowadays kids are constantly in contact with hundreds of people they don't really know and consequently don't get any peace, plus drugs are cheaper than beer.
The basics are the same - kids want money and many get a job to pay for things parents won't buy them just like I had to. I apply the same rule with money as my parents did with me - I will pay for the basics and if the kid wants something fancy instead they can make up the difference. As an example, my folks used to give me money for 'Whinnies' trainers (for those old enough to remember Woolies homebrand 2 stripe) and I had to put too to get Adidas Kick instead. I didn't have a choice because to turn out in Whinnies was like turning out with 'ridicule me' tattooed on my forehead. ____________________ Now - Speed Triple, old ratty GS550, GSXR750M

Nike Bongo.
https://klekt.s3.amazonaws.com/1093900-klekt-nike-bongo-vintage-og-vntg-ds-korea-kids-youth-normal.jpg
I will never forget my first ridicule free trainers, they meant so much to me at the time. I was a third year secondary pupil
before I got 'cool' brand trainers. I remember my mum buying me some Gola trainers for the school disco some years before
and me refusing to go because I knew I would get stick over my Gola shoes (from people who didn't matter to me at all in hindsight).
When I think back to how hard she was trying, despite not having a great deal of money, I feel quite guilty actually. I think
my Bongo were from the catalogue, paid for by my paper round, milk round and fruit and veg stall money mostly. They were
priceless to me at the time. I remember my first pair of Farah sta-press as well but that's another story.
Never felt the need to jump off a bridge though. I was one of the desperately uncool kids, add to that being the fat,
goofy kid, rubbish at sports (Admittedly having no idea what a magnificent specimen I would eventually become)
and you can imagine what it was like for me in a Dagenham comprehensive during the 80s. I started smoking to
try and be accepted by those cunts, which I then kept up for over 25 years damaging my health long after I saw any of them
for the last time. I suppose these days the needling continues via social media even after school. But I'm pretty sure
I would have discovered the off switch pretty quickly if my school days had been in the present time. ____________________ Currently enjoying products from Ford, Mazda and Yamaha
