hi

my front forks on my Honda shadow 125 seem to be way too sloppy, not stiff enough at all and downhill in the rain/ over loose gravel on the road gets very dangerous

i was thinking about a rebuild kit, but if I'm going to be taking them off anyway would it be worth buying some second hand upside down forks off ebay would this be difficult to do? i was hoping for a straightish swap with probable custom bearings made.

thanks

Y-e-r-s... rain, gravel & cruisers TEND to be a bit like that..... a decent tyre may help, but... itz a cruzer! It aint a sports-bike, its not designed to be 'taut'...

Old age suggestion here is the old paddock lore; want a faster bike? Fit a better rider!!!!! How long have you been on the road? Can you honestly, with out irony or delusion, say that you are experienced enough, and qualified enough to tell, what is a problem with the bike, and what, m-i-g-h, 'just' m-i-g-h-t be a 'feature', that is something you should expect, learn to live with & learn to compensate for... let alone, have the engineering acumen and know how to start redesigning something that 'onda with all thier engineering experts and big computers got 'wrong'.. more make it better?

First rule of engineering, before you try building a better mouse-trap, "Dont ask 'why-not', ask 'why-so'" the motorbike has been about and evolved for almost 150 years. An awful lot of very talented, and very experienced folk, have, in that time spent an awful lot of time, effort and cold hard cash trying all the different possible permutations of how 'best' to build a motorcycle.... they didn't do it just for laughs, and make you an over-chromed under-powered cruiserette just for laughs.... though there is the possibility it was in thier minds.....

Next rule of racing; "Before you try and get more than standard... make sure you got all you should have AS standard'

USD forks on a 125 Cruiserette? Well, I suppose there's folk that like a challenge, and anything is possible with a big enough hammer and an oxy-torch... BUT, this is not a fantastic idea from the start. Really. It's just not.

Fitting USD forks to a Shadow 125?

But. I'm not sure if stiffer forks are going to provide the answer you're looking for in regards to lack of grip when going over loose gravel.

What do you mean when you say they're "sloppy"? Boucy, or flexing excessively, twisting, notchy steering?

If you buy second-hand forks, they may or may not be better than the ones you have got now. However, you could buy second-hand ones and replace parts as necessary, at your leisure, then swap the lot., to minimise downtime.

As otherwise said, if they're just springy, change the oil!

Fix what is there, or buy a better bike. These are both cheaper and easier options than building some sort of special. The main advantage however, is that they are both proven to work, whereas sometimes with a fork swap you could end up worse off.

Just like all groups, you get nice people and you get not so nice people. You also get people who are normally grumpy but are having a good day, and normally nice but having a bad day. Just like real life.

You need people to offer proper advice but if we're being honest, the nice guy offering all the answers rarely makes you piss yourself laughing. It's the banter that'll keep me here lol

be aware that cruiser-geometry bikes will feel very vague and bouncy at the front. Use recommended fork oil and don't confuse preload with spring rate/stiffness.

Over on viragotechforum they like to recommend very thick fork oil and an inch or 1.5" spacer in the forks preloading the springs. This takes up most if not all the static sag and makes the front end feel wooden as hell. It doesn't dive under braking any more, but the front wheel just skitters over the tarmac. My (long gone) XV535 had what looked and smelled like 80w90 GL4 gear oil in there and a pair of huge torx socket shimming the springs. Set to factory it dove under braking but the thing stopped. Unexpectedly quickly as goes the claim of the guy who rear ended me. No, an abs astra still stops quicker than a cruiser unless there is a fault between the chair and pedal.

Expect fork dive. It happens. Get used to it. It tells you how hard you're breaking. Is normal. It helps control the weight transfer to the front wheel and gives you shorter geometry which helps your turn-in.

Everything's shit on gravel. Particularly skinny tyres. Harder front end won't help. If you're getting fork dive in deep and moving gravel it's a sign you're about to spill.

Best way is to take the front end off, drain it's oil, then lay it on it's side, and see if the council will collect it.
