Looking at replacing front door and garden doors with UVPC ones. Anyone had this done recently and can give ballpark of what it cost?

£1000

Maybe depends on your palate/pocket.

I have seen some rather bottom end stuff in B&Q.

I would:

Check out reviews of the big ones.

Call the ones you fancy and find out what they sound like on the blower. (I know talk is cheap.)

And make a short list.

I need my front door stripped and re-painted. That is probably not any help for you.

You do realise you are opening a 45 gallon can of wurims by asking that on here?

I had a quality set of UPVC French doors made to measure and fitted 2 years ago for £900.

They replaced a set of shitty wickes/B&Q ones, the difference was unreal they felt so much more solid and much warmer than what they replaced.

I use Veka profile doors from Stevenswood glazing. Not much more the Wickes etc, but custom sizes and you can get the door furniture you want, like black warm edge spacers or low level disability access thresholds.

My 4' french doors were like £600 a set this summer.

Basically 2 doors that both open out, an alternative to patio doors where usually only 1 can slide at a time (covering the other)

They help to open up a room and bring the outside in.

Edit
really handy for bringing sofas into your house.

I'm using these guys for the front door, a couple of french doors and a few triple glazed tilt and turn windows for the rear elevation at the cottage, after a lot of reading around and pricing they're pretty competitive on the cost and seem to be supplying a good spec for a cheap UPVC place.

I'm going supply only as I'll have building control on site anyway so fitting myself isn't a huge headache, I'd generally recommend paying someone though. While it's not rocket science it's a bit of a faff, and by the time you've factored in shims, foam, hassle with warranty and BCOs it's usually far easier to pay a local fitter.

No he works 12 hour night shifts in an underground bunker with no network access. As I've now been up for 16 hours and won't get any sleep for another 4 hours or so I shall fully reply later.

Thanks for all the replies chaps, given me a lot to go on. Thumbs Up

I will be going fully fitted simply for the convenience. I used to fit this kind of stuff 25 years ago and it's either straight forward or an absolute nightmare. These days I don't have the tools or the time to do it, I just had to buy a set of wood chisels as I needed to fit a new lock so don't really want to buy any more stuff at the moment.

I didn't realsie that building control had managed to amass so much red tape in the intervening 25 years. I always knew my local council were bad requiring permission for plumbing in a washing machine but it amazes me the extent of approval needed for basic things these days in private dwellings, approval needed for a new front door, new radiators etc seems a little extreme.

That sounds extreme are you sure that's right?

I remember vaguely something about not messing around with plumbing or electrics without qualification, but a washing machine!? Laughing

Also, given what you've done with bikes and cars a door is a doddle.

I remember the landlord ordering us a new washing machine, fitted. When they delivered and seen it was a built in (had a door front on) they refused saying they don't do that kind. Shocked

Suffice to say I did it myself - after cutting the plug off

Shifty

My gran just has both doors fitted, high in security with anti snap locks,

Both doors/frames, a small window next to the front door and a bit of rendering around the doors where the old stuff fell off. £1600 all in.
