Dear auntie BCF - our rescue cat died earlier this year just before the birth of my now 5 month old daughter. We took her out on Friday to a kiddie farm type place where we saw a sign that they had some kitten for adoption and stupidly went to look at them - they had a lovely black chilled out girl kitten. So dear auntie BCF should I get the kitten?

Can you and the family commit to another little family member?
You know you want to.
It’s no good asking us to talk you out of it.

I think talking me into it - I appreciate the massive commitment that we would be taking on!

Yes and no!

Pets bring extra commitment and sure they can be held in a cattery if on holiday - just means extra costs - vet bills too. If that's affordable then I don't see why not.

Will it be a house cat or allowed outside?

Vet bills / cattery are affordable, that’s no issue.

We currently own a 2 bed first floor flat - we are looking at buying a house fairly soon but initially the 15 week old kitten will need to be kept as a indoor cat. Our last cat was but he had FIV and had to be kept indoors which was the reason we got him.

No, pets are to tying. You'll want to be out and about soon with your daughter, leaving the cat home alone or left to roam the streets annoying your neighbours.

I have two indoor cats. One nut case who charges around most of her waking hours, and her big brother (twice her size) who is more chilled. Only runs around for a couple of hours then snoozes/cuddles.

Both are well adjusted to being indoor cats, though I have lots of toys and things for them to climb on/hunt/kill (especially my ankles!)

Used a couple of cat sitters as I think they're a lot less stressful for indoor cats. They are in their environment/home and a new visitor who feeds/plays with them is always welcome! If I had outdoor cats, I would probably go for a cattery as they'll be able to be watched for any medical problems.

Oh and yes, get kitteh!

Cats need to be outside where they can do some good (catching vermin). Wait until you get your house IMO.

If they only killed rats, mice, and dirty pidgeons I wouldn't mind. But they also kill all manner of wildlife including the little toad that used to live under my shed (torn apart remains in the middle of the lawn RIP Sad ).

Maybe I'm just not a pet person.

Only things I don't like about cats are them killing local wildlife and when cat turd gets up my finger nails - and why I'd asked about indoors and out.
I suppose a bell collar will help keep birds safer but ultimately a cat is a killing machine.

I'm not against cats but do feel they should be kept indoors.

If you're getting cat eggs up your fingernails then you're doing it wrong.

It depends on whether the death of a loved one in your early teens is an inevitable life lesson or a crushing blow at a vulnerable time. Get a goldfish and a guinea pig too so she'll have experienced loss three times before grandad dies.

Oh fuck, is that why my daughter has bought my grandson a pet hamster?

To harden him up for when Grandad dies?

I'm guessing this chap on my lawn a couple of days ago didn't bite it's own head off.

So your prejudice extends animals as well, does your bigotry know no bounds?

For all you know Ozzy Osbourne could have bit its head off

Quote:
As Osbourne recalled to Wall, “I just remember this PR woman going on and on at me. In the end, I said, ‘Do you like animals?’ Then I pulled out one of these doves and bit its f—ing head off. Just to shut her up. Then I did it again with the next dove, spitting the head out on the table, and [the woman] fell on the floor screaming. That’s when they threw me out. They said I’d never work for CBS again.”

"What do you mean you horrid cat-kicking bully that the Mammal Society have determined that the UK's 9,000,000 cats kill at least 275,000,000 other animals including 55 million birds every year?"

"ARGH MY ED URTS"

But they don't kill rats, they're rubbish at that. The Mammal Society's survey recorded less than 200 out of 270,000,000 animals killed.

My parents had a dog once that was a fantastic ratter, though.
