All these things add weight though! Your all going to be on the other side when buying a new bike. And if a WSB 1000 with lights is what your after, are you really going to pay more money for a bike with such security features that weighs 10kg more than all its rivals that just have a simple std steering lock?

My suggestion was half serious, but on the same principle as having a car where you can remove the steering wheel and take it with you as a theft prevention device.

A vault grade steering lock or a Swingarm big and strong enough to have holes through both sides and a locking bar that fits through is fantasy land, and would make any given bike too expensive and uncompetitive. It might actually help the guys that lift the bikes off and into vans too!

But most of us don't want that, you only need to look at the new sales figures each month to realise that market is shrinking

I do agree that some sort of removable steering system would be ideal, i even used to have a removable steering wheel on my old Celica

And how many bikes are actually stolen by lifting into vans, certainly the most recent crime wave around Londonistan is committed by yoofs on mopeds, who, like i said, are usually 8 stone wet through, and if they can break a steering lock as easily as they do, it is clearly not fit for purpose

You wouldn't by a ground anchor and chain you could snap with your bare hands, so why should we (as customers) be accepting weak ass security devices from bike manufacturers

Sorry but Ste is right, the issue isn't more secure bikes, the issue is less thieving scum / more beat officers / better society.

The only thing that OEM could do better is standard fit GPS trackers built into the loom / frame / wheels etc.

How about some kind of cryptographically secured immobilizer deep inside the engine, that disables the engagement of something serious. E.g. something that stops the cam chain. Something you'd have to split the crankcase to get at.

The only wires attached to it are power and a serial line. A transponder authenticates against it by sending a signed cert, which is authenticated in the box, much like SSL certs are validated client-side in web browsers.

It would have to fail safe, use some kind of mechanism that will only lock if the engine is stopped.

Only good if it can be activated by the tracker company. The problem i have with stuff that can't be nicked unless they have the keys is that they will stop at nothing to get them and the bike off you.

Feral cunts in my house - if i get the chance, it's me first.

It's time the law got behind that.

Well, unfortunately we can't kill the thieves with no fear of retribution; my OP was to think up some way, prefereably universally applicable, of preventing bikes being ridden off. It's been pointed out that the absence of power is not necessarily an issue, although in some cases it might be helpful... so I guess it's stopping the wheels going 'round, which a decent manufactured-in solution might be good or some new idea... and cheaper/more convenient than lugging around bloody great locks; or somehow making the bike configurably uncontrollable.

How about we add a GSM connection that fetches a signed cert from the cloud, a cert that you could block. Or perhaps you use your phone to authenticate (e.g. using NFC contactless), something smarter than a simple key, and your phone relies on you having an active account to keep the key fresh and rotated.

There's a risk of a blurring of ownership here. E.g. PCP schemes that restrict the amount of mileage you do and use anti-theft mechanisms to enforce limits. You'd probably want key escrow in the event that your bike manufacturer goes bust, or otherwise decides it no longer wants to support older vehicles.
