So, my working-from-home GF went on a walk during lunch today, and spotted the results of some fishing by the local constabulary:

https://cdn.bcf.44bytes.net/files/fishing.jpg

One of these is an SH300 owned by me and stolen a month or so ago - it's the third scooter in, in the centre row. This was the SH300 that was originally bike-jacked from me, then recovered in a pretty poor state (dented front wheel, snapped suspension, dubious frame straightness). I had it parked up in my rear garden, for occasional cannibalization for spares.

The engine has been completely removed (an engine I swapped myself), including rear wheel. Also, the clocks were removed. The only significant bit remaining that I'd want to take, I think, is the front brake disc, as that's an advisory on my GF's last MOT.

While my GF was taking this photo, she was approached by a chap the estate employs to pick up rubbish. He told her the police had pulled these out of the canal; and that he'd met another man earlier who told him that his neighbour steals bikes, strips them down and dumps the remains in the canal. And of course, this chap doesn't really want to get involved in reporting his criminal neighbour.

This pile of bikes is about 150m from my back garden. I'm inclined to suspect the thief may be quite close, and an examination of people's back gardens in the area may be revealing.

What would you do?

(This is actually the second stolen, crashed and then recovered SH300 that has been removed from my back garden. For all I know, this chap may think he's doing me a service.)

The canal seems like the appropriate place to dump his body. Thumbs Up

Actually that was done by one of the Bike Theft Protest Facebook groups as local plod weren’t interested in it. Someone spotted one of the bikes when they were magnet fishing and word got back to the group, they asked for volunteers to go and hook them out last Saturday. Originally thought to be two or three bikes they eventually got nine out.

Maybe you should drop them a message through FB? Be interesting to see if all of the threats they type out are keyboard warrior posturing or something that they would be prepared to back up with actions.

Aye, chain him to the scooters. I'm sure the owners would approve.

Rounders bat to ankles, fingers, elbows, and teeth.
I’ll bet bike theft would not the first thing on his mind.

Sadly I’d recommend anonymously post his details via e-mail to the police.
However I’d be VERY sure before giving information to anyone.

Buy a drone, or find a local drone fan to have a fly across, I suspect this garden will stand out.

60% of the time? Tut Tut Is It's a scientifically proven fact that thieves commit less crime when they're dead.

It is the only solution, I would go as far as calling it the Final Solution but some people might get the wrong idea if I said that. Laughing

It's embarrassing living in this country with bike thieves like the European imports stealing them and shipping them home. I'm not sure how I can live with myself (I'll get my coat)

As Albert Pierrpoint once pointed out, none of his 'clients' ever re-offended.

If it helps, the police dragged two more bikes out of the exact same spot either today or yesterday. That makes 12 bikes recovered since Saturday 13th. Time to start kicking up a fuss with local police/council/bike theft groups etc as you clearly have someone (or a group of people) living in that area and using the river as their own private dump.

Perhaps if no one (except us) can get worked up about bike thefts and dumping, try the environmentalists - a dozen bikes/scooters in the canal can’t be doing the water or the wildlife any good; get the bar steward for environmental crimes instead.
