I'm currently in the process of purchasing 5 items from an eBay seller in Japan. Four of the items are a little under £13 each including postage and the fifth item is a little under £19 including postage. The seller has agreed to combine postage and refund my paypal account though hasn't said by how much.
One of my concerns is that by combining the items I may be subject to VAT and or Import Duty. Another concern is that if I have them all shipped individually then I may be subject to 5 lots of handling charges by the shipper.
Advice from anyone with experience of purchasing items from Japan would be appreciated.

Depend entirely what you're importing as to the level of duty you will face.

You're right to worry about him shipping separately though, if they pull each one up individually you'll be fucked on the handling charges alone.

It would be unlucky to get done on import duty and VAT for some old parts list books. Laughing

Have him mark their 2nd-hand value as Y1000 for the lot, problem solved.

UPDATE
The items arrived last week via Royal Mail and there was no handling charge levied or VAT/Import Duty to pay.
The seller did combine the postage costs and sent a refund of £ 20.70.
Well pleased Very Happy

It seems unclear when you will get a fee or not, a problem area is that Royal Mail charge £8 to collect a fee even if it's only pennies.
A $30 camera strap I got from USA ended up costing nearly £40 Rolling Eyes

Would there not have been an immediate request for payment or at least some formalities to complete?

If you have tracking it might seem to spend several days delayed on arrival (in UK) until they assess the value.
They won't deliver until any fee is paid, it can be done online after you get a card about why they won't deliver until you pay.

Those handling charges always made me think they were sitting in a grey area legally.

Something I neglected to mention earlier is that the package arrived 'damaged'. It had been opened by person or persons unknown and put into a clear plastic outer with a sticker attached stating that it had been received by The Royal Mail in a damaged condition.
I do wonder who decided to take a peek inside my package and what their motivation might have been Thinking

The damage could have been anything tbh. I'm sure customs place relevant tape/bags and stickers if they need to inspect goods?
Edit: Those repairs have official text on them and a letter sometimes accompanies said opened container.
