Anyone got a recommended contact for a HPI check from a VIN?
I have bought a frame with clear VIN but seller had no idea of the original Reg number as it was from a pile of spares that he never got round to using.

Ultimately you need to go to DVLA to get the V5 docs but before that you need the full spec including the Reg#. A friendly HPI check should give you the original Reg# (if registered in the UK) and also status; stolen(!), outstanding HP, insurance write off, etc....
If you go through websites such as the RAC, etc. then they will want the Reg# to search. Also, if it turns out the frame is from a stolen bike, then you might get a visit from the Old Bill for handling stolen goods. It happens even if you bought in good faith.

This guy can do it: https://www.bikechatforums.com/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=63826

Thanks for mentioning me guys, it's £23 and if you dont get the results due to incorrect number supplied or purely a non registered bike the next check is £13.

Checks from a reg are £10 and always have been.

Thanks, Yodi

Yodi was recommended in posts several years ago. I've emailed Yodi (a week ago?) but no reply. I think I possibly went to Spam Sad
Have you got a number for txt?

Costs you nothing to ask DVLA for it. They do know it, it's just a matter of persuading them to tell you.

For an inquiry the DVLA require Reg# (which is not known) and also for the bike to have been UK registered. They are also notoriously fussy (anal) about details and make mistakes transcribing VIN. The DVLC might also be able to assist but if the frame is nicked then they are all duty bound to notify the old bill and then it will cost you plenty. Better to make a friendly inquiry via a HPI search to see where you stand and then decide what to do next.

Well that's the general plan.

I've just obtained a V5 for KH250 frame I bought a while ago with no registration plate or documents. I had a friend in the motor trade do a HPI check from the frame number and luckily it came up with the registration. He told me he has done a few recently from the frame number and half the time they don't come up with anything, but for £5 it was worth a gamble Very Happy
