Hiya guys (and girls if there is any).

Spent years riding off road and had a brief but illigal stint on an old z550 in the 80's.
Got hacked off with the motocross scence and the ever increasing practice track fees and lack of places to ride, so in january this year I passed my direct access and got meself a DR350 with a view to a bit of greenlaning.
The DR turned out to be an underpowered dog and i soon disovered that I was doing a lot of two up riding, as it was cheaper and easier to nip the kids about on the back of the bike rather than in the car, so it was quite impracticle on the DR.

Now looking to get my first proper road bike and think i might be able to scrape up about 15 hundred quid.
Was thinking of the zzr600 as it would seem to fit the bill for nipping the kids about and rides out at the weekend.

Anyone got any views on the zzr?
Will it be a bit much for my limited road experience, will the insurance cost me a fortune (i think it's in group 13) and will I be buying a load of trouble with my limited budget?

Sorry for the longish post and thanks in advance.
Fantasic looking forums BTW.

r1ch.

Hubby rides a ZZR600 and it was his first bike. insurance wasnt all that bad (not sure what group) but it wasnt way too expensive for him.
I used to go pillion on it before i learnt to ride myself and its a very comfy bike, I cant ride it personally as its too big for me (cant touch the ground) but he says it is nice to ride. Had the power there when needed and is comfy to ride.

Well I am a big fan of the ZZR600, I am hankering after one for next summer.

They are bloody good bikes, excellent for long journeys as there so comfy, and the can go at one hell of speed, 150 is what is claimed.

There insurance group 13 which makes them one of the cheapest sports 600's to insure.

As with most Kawasakis they do suffer from corrosion if not looked after etc, also the cush drives do tend to wear out alot on the ZZR making gear changes hard, as I found out on a test ride of one not long ago.

hubby just told me he paid £340 fpft last year.. and this year he is paying £153 ftpt (1 yrs no claims).. he's had it a year and the only trouble he's had was when he came off on some diesel and broke the clutch casing and front brake lever.. its done 33k miles and still runs well...

I've since learned that long posts are the way to go on this forum, all to do with karma and stuff, so I take back my apology and apolgise for apolgising.

I must say that I'm finding the prospect of (i think somewhere near) 100bhp quite daunting and I don't think I'll be going anywhere near 150mph.

Is the power delivery nice and smooth on a zzr600? was also thinking about a zzr 400 or am i just being a big pansy.

The trouble is, none of my mates have got road bikes so i have'nt really had the chance to try one.

Well to be honest when I test rode one (bare in mind this was a 1991 D Version) Its power delivery was quite relaxed if kept below about 4000RPM and it had good midrange and enough torque, and had a mad rush of power above that which was good too.

Don't go for the ZZR400, its just a sleaved down ZZR600, and its too heavy and slow, also parts are hard to come by too.

If you think the ZZR is going to be too powerful I can highly recommend the GPZ500S Very Happy.

Cheers Craig, you're probably right about the 400 being a waste of time, especially as I will be carrying a pillion a lot of the time (oh, and i'm fat)

Funny you should mention the gpz, it had crossed my mind.

Well there bloody good bikes, I've had quite a far old speed out of mine and It took well to taking a pillion too, its got ample power for me and handles amazingly well.

Insurance is cheaper too as its only group 9, so is servicing as its only a twin, it'll use less petrol too, so you should consider one Very Happy.
