Hi,

Yesturday I decided to remove the airbox, reason being is during the rain I cannot ride at all. Its sucking dirty rain water in through the front of the airbox, and causes the bike to stop for around 20-30 mins until the water evaporates. I tried to put a snorkle on it facing backwards however that caused the bike to choke and wouldn't even move.

** While airbox was on, I would get temps around 61-68c Max when riding - With brownish plugs, not white or black **

After removing the airbox, and putting a filter over the intake, I ran it without adjustments and my plugs where black, I've ajusted the mixture a bit now, so its brown like it was before. I rode and it pulls fine, I must say theres a bit of performance increase I think. But the bike is now running around 68-78c MAX.

Is this normal?? This high'ish temp when I've removed the airbox??

Is there a chance the engine can blow at this temperature? Considering the plug is a brownish not black or white.

You've made the bike run massively lean. Don't do this, it will just seize up.

Put the airbox back on, and work out why rainwater is getting in and see if there is a way you can stop it. You need to fix the actual problem rather than trying to work around it in this way.

Tell us more about where the rainwater comes from, how it gets in and why you think it evaporates and the bike starts to work?

As MarJay says, also you are only changing the low revs mixture and not the high revs.

Looking at the fiches I found on the internet... It looks like the airbox should face away from the oncoming air, and has a snorkel which should sit under the tank. I'd be surprised if water gets in to an airbox which still has the snorkel and hasn't been messed with...

{edit} Ah so the snorkel does face forwards, but it's under the seat/tank right?

Don't go trying to think you can make any sense out of spark plug readings, especially with unleaded fuel. They are almost worthless for trying to determine rich/lean or just right mixture conditions.

Aprilia didn't obviously make an intake into the airbox that would suck in water, so you need to fix what is causing water to be anywhere near the airbox. You'll suck far more water into the carb with an open filter, and even if it was jetted right and didn't cause upset Carburation it'll sound shit with no airbox.
