Hi all,

Bought a Suzuki GZ 125 2003 model a couple of weeks ago, all worked fine at first but now the indicators have an issue.

The indicators work when the bike throttle is closed but as soon as you turn the throttle they switch off, as soon as you release the throttle again they come back on, this applies whilst stationary and whilst moving. All the other electricals seem to work fine, anyone have any idea why this might be happening?

Totally new to riding and maintenance but happy to learn, suggestions welcome.

Sounds like a voltage regulator problem. Measure the battery voltage when the engine is stopped, when the bike is ticking over and when the bike is held at 6000rpm. Anything less than 12.5 or greater than 14.5 is a sign that something is wrong with the VR

What happens to the indicators when you press the horn button or apply the brakes or flash the main beam???

Thanks for your replies, flashing the main beam and the horn button has no effect on the indicators however having the choke on full cuts the indicators just like the throttle once it starts revving up.

I'm not able to test the engine voltage at the moment but I'll check this weekend if I can.

I would check the wiring loom near the carb and along the path of the throttle and choke (although IIRC it's a fast idle switch in operation rather than a mixture adjust) cables.

does the headlight get bright on tickover and get dimmer as soon as the revs rise too? have you checked the battery voltage when ignition switch is off and also when the engine is running?

Throttle and now the choke cable, as Talktothehat says and also disconnect the front brake switch and see what happens.

No difference in headlight brightness with revs, got a multimeter today so I will check the voltage tonight.

Try the black probe on the bike frame (not paint) as well as the battery
--- negative / earth terminal.

I measured the voltage and everything seems normal, 12.5v resting, 13.5v revving and no noticeable difference with the indicators on/off.

I ordered a new VR anyway as they're cheap and it'll eliminate that as an issue (worst case scenario I'll have a spare).

Followed the cables and couldn't see anything obviously wrong, hoping the new VR fixes it.

Something must be messing with the grounds. You can also check the signal flasher unit and R/R unit.

I have just looked at the gzu cmsnl image rather than the gs one, inds are on left switch unit, so bang goes that theory.....does the bike "vibrate" a lot ? Is the engine loose in the frame ?

Is the indicator flasher unit rubber mounted ?

No the indicators are on the left, should be able to install the new VR tomorrow and I'll update with the results.

Thanks again for all your replies, if it's not the VR I'll have to do a better inspection this weekend.

First answer wins! I replaced the VR and the indicators work as normal, weird problem but it's all good now.

Cheers for the help all.
