YBR 125 Engine Oil

Hi,

The manual says SAE 10W40. SAE appears to offer an industry standard so you can be assured of its quality wherever you buy from.

But in the shops, they don't say SAE on them.

I've seen these (see pics), and I think any would do, maybe even a cheaper Asda one? I'd rather buy the Mobil one but it doesn't mention motorcycles, and the more expensive Halfords one does.

Just checking. Easier to ask this than how to fix the engine if I put the wrong kind in![/u]

I use silkolene semi 10w/40 motor cycle oil.
You should get 3 oil changes out of 4L ????

You should be looking for JASO MA (or MA1, MA2, MA2 is better) for motorcycle suitability. API standards after -SG omit wet clutch suitability. The chances are if it says 'Motorcycle' on the front then it's got a JASO certifiation, but motorcycle oil does clutch and gearbox duties that car oils aren't expected to do. Some of the friction reducers in modern car oriented oils are bad for you clutch, and your gearbox may not be protected as well as later car oil standards reduce aditives that protect gears.

I like the AX7 linked above, the clutch feel is really nice. Using Motul 5100 purely as my local independent uses that and every bike i've had has a slightly different clutch and gearshift feel with the different oils. Motul 5100 smells slightly of fruity esters. AX7 smells fairly mild. Advance Ultra is nearly clear and is almost odourless. Probably not noticable on a fairly recent 125, but older big bikes its quite noticeable. Particularly knackered air cooled things.

tl;dr look for JASO MA on the back

5w40 is also advertised by "wemoto" as suitable. 5W-40 better circulation from cold start.

Edit: May be cheaper at weekends, ECP always have a "code" to apply on their main page.
