If you want a proper VOIP handset, you need a SIP phone and a VOIP provider to provision the handset with and host the line.

I have my own white labelled platform with NTA and charge my customers £10 + vat a month for a line with 5,000 free minutes to 01,02,03 and 07 numbers, plus way cheaper international calls than a BT line. I don't do domestic customers though, only business.

If it's just one line, couldn't you just put a VOIP app on your mobile? If not Ringcentral should be able to sell one line.

I have a VoIP phone system from Altos (myphones.com). It's cheap, reliable and provides good call quality.

You don't need a specialised VoIP/SIP phone - I use my DECT cordless system through a Cisco ATA (analogue terminal adaptor) which was provided by my supplier. If you have an ATA you can use any standard landline system you want.

There are loads of providers out there but as mentioned most are geared up to service business at the moment. The consumer sector VoIP tends to be things like Viber/Skype etc.

You don't mention what you are looking to do with VoIP but I guess you are looking for PSTN replacement rather than a UC solution.

If you have a BT home hub get a new router. Once you have set anything up VoIP wise always scan your public IP for open ports on TCP and UDP. Some routers in particular the BT home hubs are complete piles of shit when it comes to security and you will be the one left with the bill at the end of it. I would recommend if you are a novice get a pre pay account, you will pay a bit more but it also limits your risk.

I see experienced companies who are paid to set up VoIP systems get hit every single day. The biggest single bill handed to a customer related to VoIP fraud that I know of was just over £80,000 (not though our network I might add). Its not impossible or even that difficult to set up a system which for the most part will be secure, but you do need to check. Some networking kit thinks its clever and does things for you even if you explicitly tell it not to, like opening VoIP ports to the entire internet. Our last honey pot was discovered in less than 20 mins after being put on the net with open ports.
