Sup.

Have a CB500 that wont pass it's next MOT and I'm really not interested in fixing it.
So i'm looking into getting a 125 as they are cheap to run and buy.

Anyone got any tips?
I don't mind buying brand new.

I don't want to buy a pre-owned bike mainly for my seriously inability to see a lemon. Which has put me in my current predicament.
Heck I may even do a review of my CB500 just to show what a shower of shit it is. To it's credit though it has not let me down yet despite multiple issues.

I currently thinking a CB125F.
I would like a suzuki vanvan but still not sold on it.

Can't you find a 'friendly' MOT tester? Confused

Why in gods name would you buy a 125 when you have a full license?

You don't want a 125. The only people who want 125's are people without a bike license. They are godawful.

Because I want to get back to FT education. So getting a finance deal on a £15000 fireblade isn't an option.

I could get rid of the bike altogether and get a annual train ticket which would cost me like £2000 a year. Or I could get a cheap [reliable] 125 that will get me from A-B.

125ccs are not that bad Teflon-Mile likes them. I joined this forum in 2012 and I have only just finished reading a single post of his about a CB 125 twin. Laughing
I remember him saying something like time on a tiddler is rarely wasted or something similar.

Get a 250/300 Minimal weight increase, a fair bit more power. You also dodge the premium on both prices and insurance when looking at 125's.

You have a range to look at from Chinese 250's to Japanese 300's, and almost anything will be better than a 125. Once mine dies, I won't be buying another.

That's a good point! 300s are quite cheap I like the look on the honda forza 300.

I may get one of them but I've only ever driven one scooter before and it's the only time i've ever fallen off a bike Laughing

Another option is a 1997 bmw 3 series I have on the drive it is a 318i with 100k miles currently sorn.
It's been parked up for 1 year so I'm unsure what that would do to it. Rolling Eyes potential money pit?

Wow, it's either idle or maximum throttle right? sheesh.

How about something like a 250 or 300 or something?

Ok, as much as I like 125's, they don't tend to be very cheap, in comparison to say a 250-500cc bike, those bikes will also have that little bit more oomp. However, depening on your usual journey, a 125 may be ideal. For the most part, most bikes, aer generally pretty relaiable, however, you need to be careful with CBF125's as some of them appear to rust pretty badly.

Chinese 125's should no longer be wriiten off as a suggestion, it's really Indian manufactured 125's you need to be more way of

Lexmoto offer brand new 125s from like £1300 with a two year warranty.

Worth it?

125’s are okay, I don’t own one, but when I did they were good.
My old Suzuki DR125 never let me down and was cheap to run.
It was easy to work on.
Everyone I know who has any interest in 125’s , say the Yamaha YB125 is a good bet as a reliable bike.

For what its worth, I’d suggest a 250.
A bit more omph than a 125 and if you pick the right one, just as easy to live with .

I'd rather have any of the bikes I posted above. Lexmoto are OK for a Chinese brand, but I don't think their after-sales is run by them as an organisation, so it relies on the local dealer being decent.

I'd get the BMW sat on your drive running, and then take it for an MOT having checked the obvious first, to see what exactly it needs to get a ticket. If it's not alot, then I'd be using that while you put your CB500 up for sale and see how much cash you can get together.

If the car needs too much work for an MOT then sell it as spares/repairs etc. If it's not expensive to get an MOT pass on.it then it would sell easier and for more cash, so it's potentially worth doing regardless of if you want to keep it.

The car and bike sold would probably get you a decent used scooter like a PCX or Yamaha X-max etc. If all your doing is A-B commuting, and carrying stuff around then a scooter is probably better than a bike, assuming you don't live in London?

Or you could sell the car and see how much work is needed by a decent bike mechanic to make your CB500 pass an MOT, and be safe and reliable, even if it looks tatty. It seems a waste to me to sell a tatty CB to go out and buy another commuter bike of 125-300cc, unless the CB is only fit for scrap?

But then having a car sat on the drive doing nothing is also a waste, so if it was cheap to get it running and MOT'd then I'd probably just use it for a bit or through winter anyway.

Far as im aware it just has a ABS light which might be due to it sitting before it got parked up it got a new sensor then immediately parked up.
Also tyres will prob need changing as they were near the limit during old mot.
Prob Battery will also need changing (dunno if leaving a battery hooked up kills it or just drains it) Front disks are rusty but i suspect that will come off fast enough if i start using it.
Other then that i don't think much was wrong with it apart from handbrake feeling a little loose.

Keeping the CB500 would be the cheapest option though I think you're just wanting a new bike the novelty will wear off rapidly and you will be full of regret especially if it's a shit slow 125.

Maybe but I don't know a decent mechanic and I've put at least £800 in the thing in the past year and it's still shit. Also it really is a POS.

MOT runs out for it APRIL 2019 and I will keep using it until it dies on me so I'm not rushing into buying something else I'm just preparing.

edit:

Just to prove it
got quoted like £150-200 for forks seals
cracked engine case may pass MOT if not then appartently that will cost like 300 to fix.
Headlight mount held together will zip-ties
no guard for the chain pretty sure that is MOT required
rear brake caliper [ideally need a new one] or it rebuilding no idea how much that will cost.
Waterpump housing corroded to hell has stopped leaking though but now the bike gets hot in heavy traffic
pretty sure there may be a underlying problem with the electrics as well but haven't had any issue with starting the bike for a few months now.
Also the thing is a rusty POS no idea how much of that will be a issue for the MOT.
And im no mechanic so this is just what I know is wrong with it.

Tissue under the dust seals for MOT. Chain guard's just an advisory AFAIK. Again find a friendly MOT tester Wink I'm always amazed when people want to finance a new bike to 'save money'.

I don't really. I will def be putting more tissue under the dust seals though. :p

I have an option
repair my current bike
use car
use public transport (Not really an option due season tickets still costing a lot )
buy a cheap 125/300

I'm reluctant to fix my bike because it is a POS and I do not know a decent mechanic.
I'm also reluctant with the car due to insurance being like £1000.

Don't bother with the CBF250, has a gearbox fault which is why they are extremely rare.

I can only speak for the Inazuma 250, great bike to ride as long as it doesn't have the factory tyres on... Laughing 75 MPG, fantastic brakes.

A lot of those sound pretty routine maintenance items and not that hard to fix, it seems more like you just want to get rid of the bike though.

Going back to a 125 is just worse in every way than a CB500.

OMFG drop the 125 idea as even new honda 4T's can shit a cam in less than 10K these days....and they are shit to ride like any 125 4T....get yourself a 500 twin as 1 its not balls to the wall just to move..it offers enough go to cruise at 80 and can be quick enough to overtake a road traffic....and C you wont die/ crash it quite as easily as a bloody 125 roller skate!!

and WTF is wrong with fireblades? I bought my last one for £1700 and sold it 2 years later for £2100 having only fitted 1 set of tires on it and mucho speed Very Happy
