Rather than de rail bodyguards thread for worshipping his ST, what's a decent performance care that is practical, ie -

Easy to live with.
Fuel consumption not in single figures Laughing
Not costing an arm and a leg for everything that breaks.
Reasonable carrying capacity. (as in tools and sack trucks)

I'm going to get rid of my CMax as it's getting to that point in life it's going to keep costing me and I'd like something nice to drive that I can still use for my work.

What about a Focus ST? Laughing

There are a few but each have pros and cons

ST - you are joining bodytard. If you can afford it buy an RS and take a dump on his bonnet

Scoob - bit chavvy but if you buy a decent one it will last forever and can shift for sure

mazda rx-8 - need to know your way around an oil change also maye a bit small for your wanting

then you have stuff like VXR (wouldnt touch vauxhall with a barge pole)

anything french is SHITE the build quality is horrendous

audi/merc/bmw sport type = £££ for a decent one

And an engine rebuild. It's probably not a factor given the OPs err... oldness but they're a lot to insure, being so cheap many have ended up wrapped around a tree. I'd still like one but insurers consider them to be a 2.4L (instead of 1.3) due to their Wankelness Sad

What do you want most from it? Straight line power and comfort for covering distance efficiently or something more lively for caning down twisty roads and entertaining? Something in between?

For a good budget option I'm really enjoying the fiesta ST the Mrs bought. Driven faster cars, more comfortable cars and more technically capable cars but that thing really makes me giggle on twisty roads roads, it's really involving. Not a comfort cruiser however. Does 35-40 mpg in normal mixed driving without making any special effort to be economical.

The fiesta isn't for everyone though. I enjoy it but others might not like it and may crave more power. What to go for really depends on your own priorities.

What would you call sporty? I have an Astra GTC which is 180bhp. More than average power, but it’s hardly a monster. Gets 35mpg, fine for me but I don’t do too much mileage.

Hey! I've got a Focus ST too.. It's a decent car for the money.

But saying that I only bought it because my wife made me. She likes it.

I wanted VW Golf GTI. I wish I hadn't listened to wife.

I think he needs a large load area from time to time (fnar) which is why I said Octavia VRS Estate specifically.
Even with its seats up the loadspace on those is quite impressive. Can even get a 4x4 (Non VRS) variant if that's
your thing. Engine from Golf Gti in the Petrol version of the VRS 220+ bhp and 150mph top whack as I recall.

Just info/opinion about my Focus ST, what I like or dislike:

Dislike:
- it looks like a big car, but its boot size is small (smaller than in my old Astra G hatch)
- gear lever needs a firm hand
- sound system is underwhelming
- dash looks dated and fills up the cabin a bit too much for my liking
- it turns like a bus in car parks
- Recaro seats are not comfortable on longer journeys
- engine is quiet outside

Like:
- on average I get almost 30mpg, it's a 250bhp car, so I can't complain
- it's really fun to drive, I live driving it on some twisty roads
- Recaro seats work great during spirited driving
- satisfying but fake engine sound inside
- sharp steering on twisty roads
- turbo boost brings a smile
- cheaper to buy than competition

See this is why I think it's quite a personal thing. My mate has a Golf R. It's much quicker than the fiesta, grips better, rides better, is more comfortable and refined. Basically its better in nearly every way. But it doesn't make me laugh like the fiesta. I think it's just too competent.

I think VW Golf GTI is a better built and more refined car than Ford Focus ST in every way.

Oh and the engine just doesn't have the same chactater as the 5pot.

I've really got one of the best cars in the world ever made. Cool Shame really as they will probably never make such a beast ever again.

I've heard fuel economy of Mk2 Focus ST is awful... 15mpg or so.
The engine sounds great though.

I'm not a fan of ST's but if you think a gas guzzling ASBO is better than a mk3 then you are dreaming, a ferrari 488 has better fuel consumption.

Correct Rolling Eyes

https://i.postimg.cc/mg3fJv89/IMG-7525.jpg

A Focus/Fiesta/Golf is too small as once in a while I have to transport an engine or engine crane.

I don't want anything silly fast but something that is quick, refined and preferably wifie will hate it and never want to drive it. Laughing Fcuk all chance of that.

I suppose I'd like something like a jag but the mix of work and play just doesn't really work with any I've seen.

I can't have more than 1 vehicle as other than mine, both wifie and daughter have cars and my work I do for beer money, so 4 cars would be utterly stupid. Maybe something that can tow a trailer for when I have those large loads. Question

Sadly I wouldn't get away with pick up. I need rear seats for the grandkids.

I quite fancy one as well.

I think Grrr666 has nailed it for OP. I'd be expecting a good handling relatively fast estate car that's not too silly to run, or too premium to buy and have serviced, and has not too big a gas guzzling engine for general use and doing decent mileage in.

A Focus estate, or better maybe a Skoda VRS etc would be good shouts, and you can get diesel GTI/VRS varients that if your doing 12-15k a year in would still be better than petrol with new EU6 compliance. You can't get a petrol usefully fast car new without low-medium pressure turbocharged engines, so if I was doing decent miles I'd still choose diesel personally especially on a new car.

Interesting posts from Kgm, I can't see any need for a small or medium hatchback as a daily driver car with more performance than a Fiesta ST though? I'd say it's the sort of maximum useful level of performance that's sometimes utilizable in today's traffic?

The Golf R doesn't do it for me. It might be capable and 4wd with 300bhp, but it's heavy and it needs it's big brakes and grip. Its also subtle and dull much more like an Audi S3 and is less striking and attention grabbing than the cheaper Golf GTI. That's a no no for a hot hatch for me. Im more into the Honda Civic look with 2-3rear wings, 3-4 cannons for exhausts and big R badges and stripes everywhere. I couldn't have a Golf R and be happy paying all that money for a subtle if very capable car.

I don't like modern stuff anyway, and I like torque steer in a fwd car and a having more engine than handling. Its not about how capable or A-B fast a car is, but how dramatic and involved it is. Also while I appreciate 4wd 0-60 superiority and being able to get out of junctions or accelerate down greasy slip roads easily, I'd rather not waste any power to more than one axle and am happy babying my way up to 40mph to have better motorway in gear acceleration when grip isn't a concern.

Or skip the chavvy, and buy a Legacy, the Impreza's grown-up brother... not that I am biased Wink

If you want extra handling, look for spec-B models - 3 litre H6 in the UK, or a GT from Japan with the neat twinscroll turbo, which is what I have. My wife calls it the Rocket Hearse Smile
