No, the chassis legs rot quite badly, I've seen a few come through my place that weren't too far from falling in half. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

My old firm had a couple of Navaras on the fleet. Both diesel, one manual and one auto. Borrowed them a few times.
If I was buying one the Auto would be the one I'd pick of the two. The throw on the gearstick on the manual variant
was about a foot. I've driven trucks with sportier feeling gearboxes. That said I'd probably go Mitsubishi L200 if I
were in the market for a pickup with a crew cab. ____________________ Currently enjoying products from Ford, Mazda and Yamaha

Mazda 3 MPS
Edit: I have a 2012 Mazda 3 Venture. Solid car and nice to drive but its only a 1.6 and having been used to quicker cars in the past the engine is dull as hell and not that economical either (average 33mpg).
I'm now off to find an MPS. |

I like the thread, I've always aimed for a car that's quick, fits the kid and dog in, pulls a caravan and suits the missus as she doesn't like the stand out souped-up hot hatches.
I've ended up with a Skoda Yeti
It's not the fastest by a large margin, but it does have 170bhp and pulls like an absolute train straight up and beyond 120 (so I'm told). I don't think many sports cars think a Yeti would provide much competition, and the element is in the surprise. The number of times I've joined a multi lane road to have the car behind immediately pull out to overtake and then left them for dust.
I've also owned an MPS Mazda 3 previously, only the bike brings a grin to my face like that used to. But then the insurance and petrol costs wiped it off again pretty quick! ____________________ Previous: Aprilia Habana Retro 50cc (beauty), Yamaha SR125 (fell apart), Honda XR125 (nippy little commuter), Honda SLR650 (Geewhizz), Yamaha Diversion 900S (Smoooooth) written off courtesy of a stupid escaped horse.
(7 year gap), BMW F650 (Relaxing ride). Aprilia Caponord ETV1000 (Big and bold). Yamaha FZS600 (got me in trouble too quick!).
Current: Yamaha TDM 900 (Comfy, light but big, power when needed). |

Scoob - bit chavvy but if you buy a decent one it will last forever and can shift for sure |
Or skip the chavvy, and buy a Legacy, the Impreza's grown-up brother... not that I am biased
If you want extra handling, look for spec-B models - 3 litre H6 in the UK, or a GT from Japan with the neat twinscroll turbo, which is what I have. My wife calls it the Rocket Hearse |
Can do even better; I've got a Forester XT, 2.5 litres of turbo power through the proper AWD system (different and better than that in the Impreza WRX). It'll do 60mph in about 6 seconds, I average low 30's to the gallon on a run and 27mpg overall. It'll carry huge amounts of stuff as it's a proper boxy estate and it'll tow 2 tonnes. It's also great fun in the snow, with winter tyres on I kept going where Defenders were struggling (tight, steep twisty Peak District backroads). They don't suffer the same chav image as Imprezas either.
Downsides; insurance is expensive, tax is insane post 2006 (my 57 plate is over £500 a year!) and they only like 99 RON fuel, preferably VPower. They're not exactly the height of refinement either. They're not cheap to buy and watch out for ones run on poor fuel, particularly manuals, as they can suffer ringland failure (auto tends to be better as it can't be laboured in the same way as the manuals).
That said, there's something rather hilarious about pulling past a Porsche Boxster (albeit a low powered one!) in an unassuming soft-roader.
If you want real fun, track down a grey import Forester STI. They'll do 60mph in under 5 seconds and possess typically around 300-330 bhp. Tend to move towards the chav image a bit though with these and they're future classics I reckon, prices seem to be going up for used ones now! ____________________ TG. |
