Shocked Jesus wept. I presume that was some serious off roading to do that!

No, the chassis legs rot quite badly, I've seen a few come through my place that weren't too far from falling in half.

Agree. But like i said, it doesn't excite in the same way, for me at least. The Golf is a better daily driver so I can see why many people prefer it but the entertainment factor is more important to me, hence my choice. But then I'd take a husky 701 over an h2 any day as well.

Looks like a Nissan.

I know a guy who had an L200 that did 250k miles with a huge % of that being off road on farm tracks etc and it was still running fine so I went for an L200 double cab as well.

My old firm had a couple of Navaras on the fleet. Both diesel, one manual and one auto. Borrowed them a few times.
If I was buying one the Auto would be the one I'd pick of the two. The throw on the gearstick on the manual variant
was about a foot. I've driven trucks with sportier feeling gearboxes. Shocked That said I'd probably go Mitsubishi L200 if I
were in the market for a pickup with a crew cab.

I've had a few fairly practical sports cars over the years .

Currently have a C6 Corvette which has a huge boot and gets 27-30mpg highway to boot which isn't bad for 450bhp.

Thinking about trading it in for a Porsche 911 4s so I can put the baby in the tiny back seats, also should handle the harsh Winters here a bit better.

Lexus GS??

Go for the 450H and you'll loose boot space but make up in performance and mpg.... waft with all the toys you'll ever need and 0-60 in 5 and a bit seconds.

After my recent cage purchase, my E91 335d touring is pretty good. Being an estate it's got the space. Can do decent mpg on a long run and being a bi-turbo with nearly 300bhp and a fuckton of torque it's a pretty fun drive.

Although it's only slightly better than an ST...

Mazda 3 MPS Thumbs Up

Edit: I have a 2012 Mazda 3 Venture. Solid car and nice to drive but its only a 1.6 and having been used to quicker cars in the past the engine is dull as hell and not that economical either (average 33mpg).

I'm now off to find an MPS.

Hot hatches are actually safer cars to drive than poverty specs models. Firmer suspension, better handling, bigger brakes, better acceleration that makes overtaking safer, wider and more grippy tyres, more air bags, traction control, more advanced braking systems and so on.

Not every hot hatch owner drives like a dick.

If that were the case, the insurance for hot hatches would be cheaper than for the 1.2 pov spec version.

Insurance is higher because they are more likely to be stolen, raced etc.

I would say it's true when driven by a.muture and experienced driver. The trouble is a large portion of hot hatches are driven by idiots, particularly now that PCP makes them so accessible. Mine is actually not too bad to be insure though, and I love driving the thing. Never fails to entertain when I'm in the mood.

My 2016 Focus ST was not too bad to insure - fully comprehensive with 11 years NCD protected, no extra security, parked on the road in northamptonshire ghetto (Insurance D rated area), I paid £400 / year.

Is the reason for the MPS that you love the Mazda 3 but just want one with more performance for the fuel economy?

Or is it that you want a turbo petrol irrespective?

I only ask as I've heard quite a few people say that they'd never buy a car that's not a turbo, as all NASP's are too slow and even if they arnt they don't have enough torque for simple A-B driving, and that you can't tune NASP engines for shit.

I used to like turbocharged cars years ago before all hot hatches had snails fitted, and now they are everywhere I'm really starting to go off them. The next car I buy will have a 2.5-3.0 V6 tuned for top end and if I feel the need a huge bottle of Nitrous oxide that only squirts from 2000-4500 ish rpm.

Electric mainstream cars can't come quick enough for me now that everything goes whoosh, bang bang, pop as it drives past. In fact I'd love a silly amount spent on a Rover V8 if I could find the ideal small car to fit one into.

I can't embrace the electric age until I've had just one car with God's own engine.

I like the thread, I've always aimed for a car that's quick, fits the kid and dog in, pulls a caravan and suits the missus as she doesn't like the stand out souped-up hot hatches.
I've ended up with a Skoda Yeti Laughing
It's not the fastest by a large margin, but it does have 170bhp and pulls like an absolute train straight up and beyond 120 (so I'm told). I don't think many sports cars think a Yeti would provide much competition, and the element is in the surprise. The number of times I've joined a multi lane road to have the car behind immediately pull out to overtake and then left them for dust.

I've also owned an MPS Mazda 3 previously, only the bike brings a grin to my face like that used to. But then the insurance and petrol costs wiped it off again pretty quick!

I think my Astra sports tourer fits the bill here.
It's an estate so it's practical and it's a gnats cock short of 200 horses so it moves.

Scoob - bit chavvy but if you buy a decent one it will last forever and can shift for sure

Or skip the chavvy, and buy a Legacy, the Impreza's grown-up brother... not that I am biased Wink

If you want extra handling, look for spec-B models - 3 litre H6 in the UK, or a GT from Japan with the neat twinscroll turbo, which is what I have. My wife calls it the Rocket Hearse Smile

Can do even better; I've got a Forester XT, 2.5 litres of turbo power through the proper AWD system (different and better than that in the Impreza WRX). It'll do 60mph in about 6 seconds, I average low 30's to the gallon on a run and 27mpg overall. It'll carry huge amounts of stuff as it's a proper boxy estate and it'll tow 2 tonnes. It's also great fun in the snow, with winter tyres on I kept going where Defenders were struggling (tight, steep twisty Peak District backroads). They don't suffer the same chav image as Imprezas either.

Downsides; insurance is expensive, tax is insane post 2006 (my 57 plate is over £500 a year!) and they only like 99 RON fuel, preferably VPower. They're not exactly the height of refinement either. They're not cheap to buy and watch out for ones run on poor fuel, particularly manuals, as they can suffer ringland failure (auto tends to be better as it can't be laboured in the same way as the manuals).

That said, there's something rather hilarious about pulling past a Porsche Boxster (albeit a low powered one!) in an unassuming soft-roader.

If you want real fun, track down a grey import Forester STI. They'll do 60mph in under 5 seconds and possess typically around 300-330 bhp. Tend to move towards the chav image a bit though with these and they're future classics I reckon, prices seem to be going up for used ones now!
