Thanks for all the advice guys. In the end I bought the magnetic bolt and some washers from Fowlers. That way if I overtighten and crush one, I can have four goes at it 😂

The washers are meant to crush.

If you over-tighten the bolt then it will damage the thread in the sump and you'll either have to fit a helicoil or replace the sump.

Ugh.

Do you use a torque wrench for yours or tighten it just so, by feel?

Use the torque wrench, you know the lbs/ft or nm yes?? post a pic of the wrench you purchased.

Are you gunna remove the clutch cover to inspect the course filter screen, if so post a pic of whats under the cover. Also get a new gasket. If the clucth cover is coming off you can flush out the sump floor when the cover is off.

I'm too lazy to use a torque wrench. Razz

If you've got one then you should use it, at least until you've got an idea of how tight sump bolts need to be.

You shouldn't need a torque wrench on a sump nut, a decent ring spanner and tightened by feel does the job.

In fact you shouldn't really need a torque wrench on a motorcycle except for the head race bearings nut.

You need a torque wrench unless you have 30 years experience, even then you would use a torque wrench.

Are the advocates of torque wrench non use offering to pay for stripped thread repairs I wonder ?
