Tomorrow's World look at a route planning system in 1971, a precursor to modern GPS systems:

Cassette was too modern, needed a gramophone version.

I can see it working for tour buses but I'm struggling to think of any other practical application.

My grandad worked on buses, and did something on a bus that was on a feature for a much earlier episode of Tomorrows World. Some barmy coin-op turn turnstile system. BBC don't have it, but my grandad filmed the part of the episode with the bus in as it was broadcast with a cine camera. Ive seen it, but my dad won' put it on youtube, cos he's too fussy about quality and can't get it right.

Blimey, I thought I was old fashioned with my ten year old Tom-Tom sat nav tapped to the handlebars.
Still it’s always worked for me so far Thumbs Up

Can you imagine the laugh you'd have got in 1971 if you'd said, 'I've got this idea; I'm gonna fire 30 satellites up in rockets, and then I'll let everyone on the planet use them to navigate with. For free. Not sure yet how that'll work though'

I genuinely don't know how delivery drivers did it in the olden days Smile With a map I'm lost in about 30 seconds. Google maps isn't perfect but I'd be f**ked without it.

It was easy, in fact I still use the same kind of map, back in the day, the
A-Z mapbook was simply the "couriers bible". Now days, same maps, but
on the phone. Mind you looking up a road name is a lot faster now.

I use google maps as another source of information, like when a new
road which isn't on the a-z.

It's rare I use google maps as a sat nav, only use it if the area is a bit
tricky or if I'm on a deadline, a time saver mainly.

I lead green lane rides. People message me "have you got a .gpx for the route". No. I use paper maps and learn the routes. Laughing
