Maybe ask on the 'R' forum https://www.yamahar.co.uk/
It does sound more like the rectifier/regulator unit,but without probing about with a multimeter it would be a bit difficult to ascertain which direction to go.
Do you have a relevant workshop manual like a Haynes or a Clymer? ____________________ Just talk bikes.What else is there?
