Hi guys,

Currently riding a K5 sv650s. My radiator started leaking the other day and i have bought a replacement to fit this week. Since all the coolant emptied onto the floor i've found my bike is taking a very long time to read the temperature of the engine before turning off the "autochoke" I can ride 5 mins to work and there is still no temperature on the dash and the autochoke is still kicked in idling at 2k revs.
Will the replacement of the Rad and top up of coolant resolve this issue or is this completely unrelated?

The 'auto choke' is probably a wax idle unit. When the water warms the wax, it melts and idle lowers.

Assuming you aren't running it with no coolant, because that would be stupid... I'd replace the broken bits, refill properly and make sure its all bled through. It should then be fine.

As long as the coolant level is correct ,if the engine appears not to warm up the probable cause is that the engine thermostat is probably stuck open and the only thing to do is replace it

The thermostat ensures the engine warms up quickly and then maintains the engine temperature at an optimum level

The coolant is low due to the extent of the leak. I have been advised by the garage i should be fine communiting on the bike for now without coolant as the engine wont get to a temperature where its required it will simply air cool.

Then short term use of deionised or distilled water to get the level up before you damage the engine!

Seriously! Running without enough coolant means the hot parts of the engine don't get properly cooled, get it topped up as soon as you can. Without proper coolant level the temperature reading on the dash is probably meaningless and goodness knows how the fuel injection will work without a proper temperature measurement.

On the SV650S there's no special drama about the coolant, other than the cap being slightly awkward under the top fairing. Remember there's a locking screw to remove as well before taking the cap off.

Set the bike on the side stand, radiator cap off, and top up. Then tweak the hoses a little to see if you get any bubbles out. Top up if necessary. Run the engine a little, top up again if necessary. Then pop some coolant into the expansion tank.
