Ive just come off the bike just now... Hit a patch of ice as I was coming out a junction...

Now i dont normally ride in icy weather... The thing is there wasnt ice when i left at 6:30 this morning... its only got colder since the sun came up D:

Went down on the left side again this time fairings all scratched up to shit... Gear peddles bent, and clutch seems loose... will take a closer look at it in a bit...

Sore foot to deal with first... Not broken this time thankfully but it got a bash...

Indeed, though tbh it was 3... dont normally get ice at 3 :p

Anyway like i say i dont ride if its icy. Trouble is it got icy after i left... It was only because i had to come back that i hit the ice. :/

This southern softy wouldn't even contemplate riding a bike when the temperature drops below about 4 degrees.

Of course girls from South Shields would be riding at -5 wearing a mini skirt. Hard ladies them!

Damn, hope the damage is not too bad.

Must admit I left the bike at home today. Was a hard decision as it was cold but not icy. Be t the weather forecast said snow and -1 degrees so decided not to chance it.

Nothing terrible just badly scratched up left side... Bent gear peddle possibly bent something on the clutch lever...

The road surface can be frozen when the air temperature is +5 degrees C; the joys of thermodynamics and the way surfaces can radiate heat away. Furthermore, there's something called "depth temperature" on roads, effectively the temperature deep within the road surface; at the start of the winter, DT tends to be warmer so even on a sudden cold night, the road can stay frost-free, but in mid-late winter, the air temps can be marginal (or have recently warmed up) but the road stays frozen.

As a rule of thumb, expect ice once the air temps get below 5 degrees C. The worst risk is just before sunrise when it has been damp and the skies have cleared; often when a compact weather front passes by, it's a race against time to grit in such a way that salt is covered on the roads after the rain has stopped (so it isn't just washed away) but before they freeze. In reality, it's almost impossible to achieve this as it can take several hours for gritters to cover their routes and the roads can freeze in less than half that time.

In the recent Kenyan attack someone (who died) was live posting about the attack on Twitter Neutral I think I'd be trying to get to safety.

Social media adds a whole new dimension to Darwinism.

'Official' advice during such incidents is "Run" -> "Hide" -> "Tell". Presumably he was at phase II, then. And decided to combine it with phase III for good measure

Im in norfolk... And yeah... It was roughly 3-6 c when i left at 6:30... but at some point hit -3 while i was swimming... and when i got out at around 9 my bike had ive all over it... was rather surpised... BUt the roads around town were fine.. wet but fine... In fact the whole ride back home (roughly 10 miles) was perfectly fine... it was liturally a mile from home that i hit it... Couldnt even see it, the road just looked wet as if it rained a bit...

Roads up here had a layer of snow, bout an inch, dropped at 6am this morning. I've heard that we should expect 12" but that's wishful thinking..
