Hello all

Unfortunately I dropped my bike at low speed and cracked my nearside and front cowling for my GSX650F 2009. Now, the fairing is "repairable" after fibreglassing and repsraying.

I've heard mixed views of Chinese replacements, however I've sighted a company selling out of Poland who are claiming to make higher-quality "OEM like" parts.

What are people's views/opinions on how best to progress here?

it's a 10 year old bike, not really worth spending loads of money on. Try and get some 2nd hand fairings & respray them, especially, as it looks like you might be looking for a new tank as well..

Could of course convert it to a naked bike.

I found my full Chinese fairings fitted perfectly, with each other.

I never tried mixing them with my originals, this is where I read the problems start.

Not sure how readily available fair kits are, but my GSXR one was only a few hundred pounds and now sits as a track set, should I ever opt to do a track day. (managed to find an OEM panel locally, so went back to OEM).

Repair or replace the lot imo, don't mix and match with copies.

No chunks missing so I'd be inclined to repair by backing with some fibreglass matting and filler from the front side - white should be easier than most colours to match. Save money for the tank as suggested.

As jobs go it looks 'fun' - well you know..

I think, based on what I've done to the nearside plastics we'll second hand that, fibre glass the front and repsray the lot.

Out of interest which Chinese seller did you go through?

Depends how fussy you are. If you're not looking to sell it on, I'd patch that up.

I'd drill "stop holes" at the end of the cracks, I'd open them out into a V-shape on the inside with a burring tool, tape them closed on the outside then bond them with West systems G-flex thickened epoxy. While it's still damp, I'd lay a strip of bias weave fibreglass sheetr or tape over the inside and wet it out with more epoxy. Then I'd paint over it once dry to protect from UV.

Then a degree of plastic filler to fill any missing bits from the outside, depending on how fussy you are about such things OR you could use more G-flex thickened with microballoons.

Briefly flamimg the plastic with a blue blowlamp before applying epoxy greatly improves the bond strength.

It doesn't look like fibreglass... are you sure it is?

Those fairing parts aren't worth it. Just my opinion. Bits of moulded plastic for £120... what's the point. That's more of a generalist bike - all round decent road bike - than a sportsbike anyway. How about buying a nice set of bars and choosing a nice headlight and clocks, and converting to naked?

It's really down to how much you want it tarted up.

Best look, Chinese replacement fairing set.

Cheapest repair, fibreglass and filler.

Both will work fine.

It'll be ABS I expect but can still be repaired with fibreglass - like we did with metal cars back in the day Wink

Don't forget resin and scrunched-up newspaper for the sills.... Smile

Anyway, there are better ways, I've been very impressed about how easy it is to repair ABS to "as new".

Here's a long and earnest demo by Kelly (I would not vee out the cracks like he does, and just reinforce if necessary with thin ABS sheet):

You can make glue by mixing ABS shavings or thin bits with MEK to the desired consistency. I store it in (clean) old Marmite jars Smile

Here's John, who is somewhat "whacky":
