That's cool. I'm looking to spend around £2,000 on my first bike if possible but would be nice to have that sort of budget. A guy up the road has a first gen DL1000 V-Strom for sale and has indicated he wants around £2,300 for it, I reckon I could get it for £2,000. Having said that, this has recently come to my attention:
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201811172511988
Seems like a lot of bike for the money. While classed as a sports tourer (I think), I've checked on that cycle ergo site and the forward lean doesn't actually look that bad. Could be a comfortable ride...
Decisions, decisions!
I'm like a kid in a candy store with only 5p to spend. ____________________ Must Go Faster

So you’re going for a 1000cc bike? |
Yeah this next purchase for me is going to be my first proper big bike as I currently have a 125 too. I could allow myself a bigger budget but while I'm going to do my damnedest not to drop it I have to realise it's a pissabolity so would be a shame to do that to a nearly new bike, and also as, I'm sure you'll sympathise with, it's difficult to know exactly what bike is going to be your perfect bike until you're probably ridden a few different types so was just gonna get something cheap to start with and maybe upgrade in a few years. I think my ideal bike would be an Africa Twin or an R1250GS.
Does living in central London really make that much of a difference then??? I got a quote for where I live in rural Kent on a ZZR1400 (ridiculous, I know! But just to get an example of the most I should expect to pay for insurance as someone else scared me saying it would be astronomical for a new rider) but it only came out at £690 for TPFT which I actually didn't think was too sad. Although if I were looking at spending anywhere near £5,000 or more on a bike I'd probably be looking towards fully comp which was coming out at over a grand for me on that bike.
Regarding the 1000cc, it's not a prerequisite, I am open to the possibility of getting anything from 600cc upwards, I just kinda got it in my head that because I done my DAS on an ER-6, whatever I buy next has to have at least as much power and torque as the ER-6 and preferably be lighter (from memory approx 70bhp, 50ft-lb and 200kg). I drew up a list of options and there's a range of bikes in there from 600cc to 1300cc to consider in the style/riding type I like. Just so happens some of the larger displacement bikes are coming up quite cheap so why not?! Just got to trust my right hand not to try to kill me! ____________________ Must Go Faster

I get what you’re saying. It is likely I will drop the bike but with that logic I’ll end up with a shit bike which won’t work for my intended purpose. I also hope that with the right protective accessories on the bike I can limit the damage.
There is quite a bit of difference between central London and Kent. I know because we are actually moving to Kent in a few months so I’ve been running quotes on both locations and on average there’s about £200-500 difference on fully comp.
You’re lucky that you can afford insurance on a big cc bike! I’d love to get the Honda Fireblade but the insurance alone would bankrupt me |

That's cool where in Kent are you moving to? Just roughly, I don't want an address so I can stalk you or anything LOL
TBH I don't think I'd pay over about £750 for insurance. Especially on the lower value stuff I just kinda think what's the point of fully comp. Especially if the vehicle isn't your only vehicle and you could get by without a replacement for a few months if the worst happened. The insurance companies ALWAYS get their money back out of you in the end if you make a claim so wherever possible I avoid making any. Obviously if a third party is involved that's another matter but if not I'd always prefer to pay for the vehicle to be repaired myself or scrap it... unless like I said I'm looking at insuring something worth in the region of £5,000 or more. Same with phones, washing machines, laptops etc. the insurance/warranty companies can fuck right off. I make a point in life of only insuring stuff I either have to legally or anything I own that I can't afford to replace tomorrow (i.e my cars and my home building and contents, that's about it really, don't even bother with breakdown cover any more because at the end of the day all that is is an insurance policy, I take the view if I break down I'll pay a few hundred quid for recovery but in the long run I'll save money).

Luckily the nice ones landed on me. If you ride like you're scared to drop it, the acid wielding thieves will spot you and have it away! |
I was talking mainly about the first year or so of riding because the chances of coming a cropper or probably higher. I wouldn't live my whole life riding around on something inexpensive and riding it like a pansy because I was afraid to damage something more expensive. Only for the first year or so. Same with my kids, I tell them to get a shit car and forget getting anything expensive or anything on finance for the first year or so cos despite how good you think you are, the inexperience will dictate you're more likely to smash it up in the first year. ____________________ Must Go Faster

No, what I was implying is that while I'm a novice and the risk of dropping a bike is relatively higher in the first year than after the first year, I would rather risk dropping a lower value bike in that higher risk period. That's all. There's always a risk, no matter how experienced you are, this is true, but you can't deny the risk is higher in the first year than after the first year surely? ____________________ Must Go Faster

I sense we're just not going to see eye to eye on this one
It's got nothing to do with worrying about who is looking at me and how cool I think I look. It's got everything to do with accepting that for the period that the risk of having a prang is relatively high, I'd rather ride something of lower value for that period so the financial loss will be less if it does happen, especially given the fact that I'd probably be looking to insure it TPFT.
I don't think you're really struggling to grasp this concept, me thinks you're on the windup.

I haven't seen you post in many of the other threads so perhaps you're not aware, I have let it be known on here that I have Asperger syndrome which is a disorder on the autism spectrum. So if there's anyone on here who should be offended by my post you're quoted there it would be me. I think you missed the point but I was ripping it out of myself there.

A bit like the episode of South Park when Mr. Garrison was allowed to go around calling everyone else a fag because he was a homosexual character in the series. But whenever anyone else said it, it was bleeped out. I think the same rule applies here
By the way I've already got four kids so won't be having any more. One has dyslexia and the other has Asperger's like me ____________________ Must Go Faster
