Morning all,

So I've decided I need to get this sorted; I've got a rusty dent on my ER5's fuel tank (presumably part of the drop damage that made it a write off in the first place); I want to deal with this as it's starting to rust a bit (despite keeping it topped up with ACF50). I'm less fussed about filling it (although I do have a squeezy tube of car body filler) but more about protecting it from corrosion. Not too fussed about matching the paint colour exactly (as this will be presumably expensive/difficult to match the colour).

What do you reckon the best way of tackling it is? Abrasive brass wheel on the dremel to get the rust off, clean with a light solvent to ensure no residue (lighter fluid or something) then paint . . . ?

thanks

It would help to be able to "picture" this dent...

I'd be inclined to fill that. Clean out any grease, paint and crap, wire brush it out, go on that with filler, then finish. Standard. If you have a colour mismatch and it matters, consider doing something artistic with a completely different colour.

You won't be able to perfectly match the original colour yourself, but stopping corrosion getting hold is the greatest importance.
The acid based rust eating products would be better at eating down to clean metal than a wire brush.
You might be pleasantly surprised at the paint shop price for doing the whole tank which would look better than a dodgy spot, even if it didn't perfectly match the other blue bits on the bike.
If you did that yourself as a 'learner' it is going to look rattish.
