PostPosted: 12:54 - 22 Jan 2019    Post subject: My laptop will not connect to internet with Virgin wifi Reply with quote

Got Virgin installed. All works. Everything works. All the android devices connected and worked at once, my xbox is connected with ethernet. My laptop connects via wifi - and "can't connect to internet". Works with an ethernet cable but I don't want to.

I've tried everything, all the usual. I'm out of ideas.

It's a deal breaker, for the laptop that is Twisted Evil , its days are numbered.

Any suggestions before I just give up using it?

I had a very similar issue when i upgraded last year to the V3 Hub/Box combo

My initial solution was to create a guest network through the settings in the hub (connected to the laptop via ethernet)

This seemed to work initially, then went flaky again and would not connect

After trying numerous things, my last idea was to see if there were any updated network card drivers for my ageing Dell laptop, and low and behold, there were, and (touch wood) it has connected reliably since

My laptop always seems to automatically want to connect to the BT network that you have to pay for, rather than my home Virgin WiFi, only started happening since Virgin upgraded my router, really annoying.

Have you tried 'forgetting' the BT network?

Not sure OP, Win 10 or Win 7? Windows is generally pretty good at trouble shooting connection issues.

You might have set up a static IP, check your TCP/IP settings in your network adapter settings and clear them.

Doesn't windows have a fix this connection issue, or, some such thing? Also, with wifi, at least when setting it up don't you have to indicate, whether the connection, is private, whether it's home or work, trusted etc..

I go for the easy life, none of these shenanigans on linux

I'm pretty sure it's not the 2/5ghz issue.

I just wonder.... I did something to rollback an update to Windows 7 that stopped Civ 4 working. I'll probably have to figure out what it was I did, reverse it, and then get online but no more civ.

stuff it. I might just buy an ethernet cable and run it round the skirting board to behind the sofa.

I'll try trouble shoot.

Open up a command prompt by click Start -> run -> cmd.exe or cmd.com whatever your verison of windows uses.

type: ping 1.1.1.1

If you get no response, then your internet is definitely broken. If you get a response then it's just a DNS or DHCP issue.

Also, a Windows geek here could tell me what the windows equivalent of "ifconfig" is and we can see if it's getting assigned an IP address correctly.

I had a similar issue and had to go into the stored WiFi connections and remove them all.

It also had a weird issue with the 2.4 /5 thing and I had 2 connections called the same thing which it didn't like, you can tell it to group them together.

Might be worth trying a USB dongle.
Forgetting all saved wifi for a clean start has fixed my laptop pretending no connections suited it.

If he can't connect to the wireless network, he wont be able to ping anything on the Internet, nor the local LAN will he?

You're testing for a connection from the laptop to the Internet, the OP can't even get a connection to the router via wifi, only via Ethernet. It's all explained in the first post.

Not necessarily, I've seen windows wifi connections only connect to the local network, but, not access the external networks. Seem to remember that's where, fix this connection etc, and/or set whether the network connection in home/work/public ?? has worked, but, as I say, it's a long time since I bothered with windows.

He can't even connect to the wifi, so he wont be able to ping anything will he, local or wide area? How is this even relevant to the OP's issue?

If he can ping something on the local network, he's clearly connected to it. He's not. Can we just stick to relevant tips, not irrelevant IT Top Trumps willy waving?

Ok, just for you sweetie Wink

That implies the wifi connection comes up, but is unable to connect to the internet. I have seen this before, to fix it usually involves running the 'fix, or troubleshoot' connection from the network control centre or whatever it's called. Also, setting whether it's a work, home , public network connection.

But, ok, very simple test, can the op see your WiFi router in the list of available wireless networks?

And, take it from there.

No willy waving, wouldn't risk it near you, wouldn't want to excite you dear, I'm only saying what I can remember from my occasional interactions with windows & networking

I can't usually be fucked with this outside of work.

Split the WiFi channels.
Ethernet.

Probably as above, i haven't bothered reading.

What model is your wireless card... I recall seeing the word Mac, what version of Mac are you on. 10.14 caused issues with my WiFi and I just fucked it off back to 10.13 cos home is for home, work is for work. Ain't got time to waste at home with iffy shit.

Splitting wifi is 100% my preferred option. Also, I doubt you take it everywhere, just static address it, DNS to google rather than the virgin shitbox and sorted.

Did you even check this?
It would cause exactly what you are getting.
Being a network engineer for 15 years, I could have helped you solve this in about 10 mins flat if you'd just answer the help offered.

I didn't when you first posted it, I did now, and no it isn't that.

My technical opinion is that my laptop is being a dick on purpose. Folded arms
