Posted: 12:54 - 22 Jan 2019 Post subject: My laptop will not connect to internet with Virgin wifi |
|
|
Got Virgin installed. All works. Everything works. All the android devices connected and worked at once, my xbox is connected with ethernet. My laptop connects via wifi - and "can't connect to internet". Works with an ethernet cable but I don't want to.
I've tried everything, all the usual. I'm out of ideas.
It's a deal breaker, for the laptop that is , its days are numbered.
Any suggestions before I just give up using it? |

Doesn't windows have a fix this connection issue, or, some such thing? Also, with wifi, at least when setting it up don't you have to indicate, whether the connection, is private, whether it's home or work, trusted etc..
I go for the easy life, none of these shenanigans on linux ____________________ Beware what photos you upload, or link to on here, especially if you have family members on them |

How? I bring lots of customers laptops home and some will only connect to my Virgin router if I enable 2.4Ghz as a separate SSID.
It's worth a check for the 30 seconds it would take to try. How old is the laptop? I often see older kit not compatible with the security type set on the router as default, or when they combine bands/auto band the different frequencies.
My Virgin Hub is set to broadcast 2 separate networks, one for 5ghz, one for 2.4ghz. If you're is only broadcasting one SSID, this could well be the issue, as this is exaclty what happened to me with my older 2.4ghz laptop, plus others I've seen.
Quote: | The Hub 3 broadcasts on the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz simultaneously. However, in their infinite wisdom VM decided to give both networks the same SSID. You can access the Hub's GUI using https://192.168.100.1 and navigate to the wireless settings and rename the SSIDs to what you want, giving the 2.4Ghz network a different name to the 5Ghz network, so you can connect to the network of your preference.
In theory if both networks have got the same name and credentials then a wireless device should connect to the network with the strongest signal. |

Open up a command prompt by click Start -> run -> cmd.exe or cmd.com whatever your verison of windows uses.
type: ping 1.1.1.1
If you get no response, then your internet is definitely broken. If you get a response then it's just a DNS or DHCP issue.
Also, a Windows geek here could tell me what the windows equivalent of "ifconfig" is and we can see if it's getting assigned an IP address correctly. |
If he can't connect to the wireless network, he wont be able to ping anything on the Internet, nor the local LAN will he?
You're testing for a connection from the laptop to the Internet, the OP can't even get a connection to the router via wifi, only via Ethernet. It's all explained in the first post. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

Not necessarily, I've seen windows wifi connections only connect to the local network, but, not access the external networks. Seem to remember that's where, fix this connection etc, and/or set whether the network connection in home/work/public ?? has worked, but, as I say, it's a long time since I bothered with windows. ____________________ Beware what photos you upload, or link to on here, especially if you have family members on them |

He can't even connect to the wifi, so he wont be able to ping anything will he, local or wide area? How is this even relevant to the OP's issue?
If he can ping something on the local network, he's clearly connected to it. He's not. Can we just stick to relevant tips, not irrelevant IT Top Trumps willy waving? ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

Ok, just for you sweetie

That implies the wifi connection comes up, but is unable to connect to the internet. I have seen this before, to fix it usually involves running the 'fix, or troubleshoot' connection from the network control centre or whatever it's called. Also, setting whether it's a work, home , public network connection.
But, ok, very simple test, can the op see your WiFi router in the list of available wireless networks?
And, take it from there.
No willy waving, wouldn't risk it near you, wouldn't want to excite you dear, I'm only saying what I can remember from my occasional interactions with windows & networking ____________________ Beware what photos you upload, or link to on here, especially if you have family members on them |

Fair enough, I read it wrong. Could have sworn it originally said can't connect to the wifi, but OK with Ethernet.
In that case, chances are it's not getting an IP lease from the router.
The next test will be seeing if it can connect to the router web console.
I'd still try separating the 2.4 and 5Ghz wifi networks to seperate SSID's though and changing the security on the 2.4Ghz to WPA-PSK TKIP, then try this one.
If Ethernet works, it's unlikely to be DNS or Firewall related. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.
