My son's just got his first 'proper' post-Uni job and is shortly moving to a new city where he doesn't know a soul apart from the mate who he'll be flat sharing with (who entirely coincidentally is moving there at the same time). He's really looking forward to it but at the back of my mind I'm slightly worried for him as to how he'll get a social life going there - it's decades since I did anything similar and I can't remember. He's a reasonably gregarious, friendly type but isn't into sport (which clearly rules out one obvious route into a social life) and he's not a biker either sadly (I blame the parent).

Anyone got any suggestions I can casually pass on as to where (other than work) he might find a mate or two?

Tinder or Grindr depending on preference.

Local boozer is generally a good bet. That's how I meet people.

So long as he doesn't hermit himself indoors all the time after work, people will happen to him. I moved to London under pretty much the same circumstances.

You do have to make a little bit of effort, and be out and about, but generally as long as you vaguely approachable, someone will eventually talk to you (usually nutters, at first, you learn to weed them out fairly quickly)

The first set of people who befriended me were some London taxi drivers (the old school sort), they noticed I was reading Exodus* in a sandwich bar in the West End where they regularly had lunch, and as 90% of the guys in the group were Jewish, they wanted to know what I thought of it. I hung out with them for about 5 years, on and off, even ended up shagging one of them, in secret, on Saturday afternoons for a while, LOL ... Shifty his mates suspected something was up but we always denied it Laughing

*I really should read it again ... that was over 30 years ago now, and I can't *even* remember what happens. Laughing

I moved to a small town when I was 19 for a 'proper' job. I used tinder for the obvious and went out with some guys for work. Wouldn't class them as pals though. I guess just finding an activity he's interested in and doing that would be the best route?

When I left uni in Bristol I moved to Brighton and stayed at a friends for a couple of weeks until I found a flat share and a job. Ended up making friends with the girls who lived above us and started becoming a regular at a pub and met people that way. Being a smallish place I also met people I know from home but didn't know lived there. I found going to gigs helped me find some like-minded people.

As long as he doesn't stay in with his mate then going out and having an interest in something he'll be fine.

He'll meet people at work. Tell him to always go out when he's invited, or no-one will invite him again. He'll make friends, then friends of friends. In the meantime he can go online dating if he's not too shy.

We still don't know where but then that's probably a wise move.
Who would want the avuncular arm of a BCF-er around the shoulders of their offspring?

I move to new towns, cities every month or two. It is a bit daunting going somewhere that you have no clue about and know no one. Worse for me as I don't speak the language (Chinese)

He will make friends in his work and find out who are genuine and who are full of BS and his life will grow.

I like to walk, so when I get to a new place I google map the place and find places of interest or a shopping mall and away I go.

Good luck to him, he will be fine. Thumbs Up

If it's Newcastle I can show him the local dogging spots (you'll meet some very friendly people) and how to speak to the women here.

Actually, on that last point - women. A firm I worked for years ago would send people up from London now and then. It was actually written into a travel document by their work place that stated to avoid chatting to women in Newcastle (if out drinking) because it will be intimidating and could end badly!

Kinda tough for him in this day and age with social media taking over life. There's a stack of voluntary organisations to mix with. Ignoring sports, there's a whole scene of various clubs and groups at uni. Geology, electronics, public speaking, drama etc.
As has been said it'll be tough but if he pushes himself he'll soon find his spare time occupied.
