It is a grey area.

The way I see it, you're in one of two camps.

Camp 1) merge at the end in slow moving traffic, which reduces the 500m queue to 2 x 250m queues but slows no one down and all is good with the world

Camp 2) merge far before the end and get into the 500m queue as quick as possible so you don't risk upsetting anyone. No one slows down and all is good with the world

I'm in camp 1 as I've been in the aftermath of the 500m queue blocking roundabouts further down the road (which wouldn't have been blocked had it been 2 x 250m queues)

But if there isn't a roundabout or side road to be blocked - either are valid I believe.

I merge in as far forward as possible. When I was doing the rounds in the works van, it was the equivalent of 'making progress' on the bike.

I wouldn't expect anything else! Wink

That's because I know how to drive and make progress, and not sit in traffic. Wink

Once again, I was not referring to the UK law system, those road signs are not British either. If you really want to read up on the topic (which you don't because why would you), then the Czech law system, under the section 3, paragraph 12 of the law no. 361/2000, the Road Traffic Act says exactly, what I was telling you about, to explain the road signs that I have posted earlier. You just took an assumption.

If people like you are negotiating Brexit deals, no wonder 2 years was not enough time.

So you preffer a one, orderly formed queue of cars with the other lane completely empty?

Prefers moving traffic, so sits in one lane causing standing traffic jam. Laughing

I failed my first motorcycle test for NOT doing this.

Once at a junction and twice at a mini roundabouts.

I waited behind cars turning right when I wanted to go straight or left.

Got 3 minors for hesitation or something. I remember the vividly the mini roundabout one I waited approximately 4 seconds. Rolling Eyes

So to recap MPD...

You agree that drivers speeding up the empty lane and cutting in - causing a domino effect of braking is bad? Yes?

So let me ask you this then, if the 1 mile tailback of slow moving cars switched to 2 x 0.5mile tailbacks of slow moving merge in turn vehicles....

Would there be (in your opinion) any possible way for someone to speed up the empty lane and cut in?

Just a simple yes or no will do.

👍

I would pull up alongside them if going straight or right.
I also drive to the end of my lane before merging.

I was taught to do both of the above in my driving lessons back in 1993.

I feel like this will be quoted in a court case one day but I've never read the highway code.

Its not law so much as advised. Think about it this way - traffic is queuing back from roadworks. If everyone uses both lanes instead of everyone piling into one as usually happens then the tailback will be almost half the size and therefore cause less interference as junctions behind won't be choked up by the queue.

Merging is a simple case of the old...keep your distance and give way to the right and if everyone did that then the merging would be seamless like a zipper closing. Of course what happens in reality is everyone drives as close to the vehicle in front (closer if its dark/raining/snowing/icey/foggy/driving an Audi) and then catches up on their social-media.

The only time I don't go to the front of traffic is at roundabouts where i assume the dingbats in cars are confused enough by these wierd looping one-way systems and I think it safer to keep well clear Shocked
