Hi guys

Quicky really,
The inner and outer sides of my chain on my newly acquired bike are rusty, outer side is pitted and inner is rusty but the middle bit where the sprockets run are fine and lubed loverly.

Should i be considering a new chain ( its only done 4k) or is it to be expected?

Also given the low miles would it need new sprockets as well as a chain? i cant see any visible wear on the sprockets.

Thanks.( looking for a tef answer..lol)

Rust and pitting hints at neglect in the past ... which has been covered up pre-sale by dousing it in lube.

Difficult to advise you, without seeing it, but if it was me I'd probably replace it for my own peace of mind.

Side plates can definitely be prone to oxidation - whilst as you say, the rollers etc. can be perfectly fine. It's certainly possible. Those three sided chain brushes can be useful here + some paraffin. But it has to be something you do a few times a week this time of year.

I'd pay little to no attention to some surface rust.

Lets have some photos so we can see what condition the chain is in. Thumbs Up

Is it worn? You can mesasure it to see the difference between lengths with the links pushed close/pulled apart (a steel tape will do).
