Saw this on facebook. Dianese and Alpinestars already have airbag jackets, and this one seems waaay over the top.

Fantastic! (I love that even the animators couldn't figure out how that one was going to work...)

We await everyone's favourite scammer to invent BAGPAL and take funding for a product that will never come to fruition.

The new Honda Goldwing has an airbag built into the tank! Not sure how much use that's going to be.

I thought being thrown clear was often better in a bike crash? Don't airbags in cars work in conjunction with seat belts anyway, as in twatting into one unrestrained is a very bad thing? They might be a good idea on a BMW C1 Thinking

I think that to be injured by an airbag you have to have a pretty heavy impact which would have otherwise done you much more harm. I got smashed into a couple of weeks back hard enough to tear the front wheel off the bottom wishbone. It set my airbag off and I wasn't harmed in any way by it.

In fact I've suffered more trauma from the endless stream of ambulance chaser phonecalls.

I fear another drawn out debate but this is what I had in mind...

With adjustment for other factors, the relative risk of cervical spine fracture was 70 percent higher for drivers using an airbag without a seatbelt, compared to drivers using both protective devices. This was even greater than the 32 percent increase in cervical fracture risk for drivers using neither an airbag nor seatbelts.

I'd always thought that the prime driver for the development of airbags was the stubborn refusal of Americans to be told to wear seatbelts, so this is quite surprising to me.

That said, I wonder how many of the "no seatbelt/no airbag" brigade got their faces ripped off as they travelled through the windscreen, compared with the "airbag only" drivers?

I hear you but what I'm saying is that (from experience) an airbag going off in your face alone isn't enough to cause you spinal damage, it has to be combined with the actual force of the impact - the real cause of the injury.

It's hardly going to be surprising that combining two safety features reduces the chance of injury but the safety brigade have made it look like relying on the airbag without the belt increases the risk because of the airbag. It's not, the inury comes from the impact, not the airbag. Seatbelts cause injury too but you don't hear anyone saying it because it doesn't suit their purpose.

Well that was one of the first google links and it seems to be suggesting double the risk with an airbag + no seatbelt vs neither. With Polarbear's Goldwing link I'd rather have that if I wasn't going to be thrown clear but you can't tell with accidents, note one of the comments...

'They cut off the part where a 900 lb bike falls on top of you.' - that could be getting thrown clear and getting up vs a bad leg break that causes you to limp for the rest of your life.

Let's analyse this again because it smacks of statistic-fudging:

M.C wrote:

You left out the first part of the quoted statistic:

The rate of cervical spine fractures was 54 percent in drivers using an airbag only, compared to 42 percent for drivers using both an airbag and seatbelt.

Now I'm no maths heavyweight but I cannot see how they achieved 70 percent. 42% x 1.7= 71.4% not 54%

I dunno ask Diane. I'm not bored enough to have this debate, there's lots of stuff about the dangers of airbags without a seat belt, injuries, airbags not deploying in some vehicles if a seat belt isn't being worn.
