Just got back from a 5 hour round trip only getting off for fuel and to stretch legs. I was in decent comfort the whole time other than my ass falling asleep after only about 2 hours in.
Has anyone had experience with some kind of aftermarket seat cover to improve the ride? Ive seen the odd bike with one of these sheep skin things but they look a bit daft:

Or for £40 M&P sell this thing:

Smoke!
Compunction to have a fag, tends to beg a respite rather earlier than this becomes a problem! Lol.
More seriously.... it's been a perenial, and I've known folk that swear by sheep-skin fleece covers, others by silicon gel pads, other's still by aftermarket seats like a Corbinb or King & Queen... but I've known as many swear AT them than by them, and often they have been the same person!! I really don't think that there's an answer here, certainly not a one-size fits all, off the shelf, pays your money one.....
Which takes us back to a pack of fags, really. Tackle at source, dont ride SO long your bum goes numb! Take a break, stretch your legs, take a pee, have a coffee, or whatever. End of the day, your talking out of your, is trying to tell you something..... A-N-D, that is, you aught stop and have a break!
I dont know what exact HGV regs are these days, but, tacho-jockeys HAVE to stop and have a break at regular intervals, Its about an hour every four-and a half, and they 'cant' drive contentiously more than those four and a half, however they cut it up. So? When you stopped to stretch your legs in that 5-hour saddle stint, was it for half hour or more? Odds is, that your saddle time wouldn't have been allowed by commercial vehicle regs; and them drivers a) do it for a living b) get an armchair to sit do it it in c) don't have to balance whilst they are about it!
So? Just because you dont have to comply with commercial vehicle regulions, is it such a great idea to?
Pushing fatigue and concentration limits, with big saddle-hours is probably one of the biggest causes of accidents, with fatigue and innattension slowing reaction times and the like, and numb-bums giving distraction to what you are doing, as monotony lulls you into false sense of security.
Which begs the cheap and simple answer, simply DONT try riding 5hour long stints in the saddle! Take a break every hour or two, and make them stops more than a cursory stretch the legs and pee break; make them a full quarter or half hour, rather than pushing your luck. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!
