You could just wire it directly to the battery with a fuse to protect, but ideally you would want to stick q relay in triggered by the ignition switch.

Yes that's the way you should do it.

You will need a 12V relay, you will need some wire and some ends.

You will need to take a feed from the relay to your battery and you should use something sensible on the bike as trigger.

I used the rear number plate bike on my ER6 on my Z750 I used the live off the rear brake switch.

I'd put a small inline fuse in too.

I’ll have to find a relay and have a go.so I can’t just tap into something that needs the ignition without using a relay

You dont have to use a relay, but a fuse is a must to protect the rest of bike electrics in case of water ingress.
I fitted one to a scoot a while back and tapped into a 10A protected circuit with a 3A fuse to the usb thing so it powers up with ignition on

It aint burst into flames yet but we live in hope............

A bodge is not to use a relay. Why do it, relays cost about £3 and a relay ensures the power is coming directly from the battery and not putting any extra stress on any other wires.

I'm pretty sure your bike can take a genuine Honda Averto alarm so there is already an unused plug probably at the back in amongst the rear light wiring that is blanked off. You can simply plug into this plug for a USB charger so no need to hack the wiring or even fit a relay.

Most Hondas 500cc and above from about 2006if not even earlier had this feature, the touring bikes often had this and an additional one at the front to connect a quad harness to.

Switched relay all day. Even without a device plugged in there is parasitic draw, I fitted one direct to battery and a week later flat battery.

I tested and didn't detect any drain but my meter isn't that good.

Have a ganders at Stinkers excellent write up.

Will I still need an in-line fuse on my usb device if there’s one coming from the battery to the relay

Fuses are to protect the wiring in case the 'appliance' goes faulty. Use a fuse value somewhat below the rating of your chosen cable.

These chargers appear to be able to source up to 2A @5v so I guess only really need a 1A feed cable at 12V but sure, add some margin. Really not sure why you include any relay for this, just a switch to isolate in case there is some 'passive' current drain. Relays are mainly used to switch high loads via a low current rated switch.

Edit - OK I understand having read Stinkwheel's guide that using an switched live from the ignition to 'fire' the relay is helpful as you don't have to remember to turn off the'appliance' to save the battery.
