My long-standing Russell-Hobbs is no more. I am thus in need of a replacement
that meets 3 simple criterion..

1) Toasts both sides evenly
2) Takes a decent sized slice - even standard slice 'toastie' will do.
3) costs less than 30 quid

There are a host of machines in this price range and yesterday I came home with a Breville that I thought would be Ok, sadly however criterion number 1 is not met. The central 'burner' is weak and thus the inner sides of the two slices are pale compared to the outer.

Can anyone recommend ?

I realise I will probably awaken the BCF sarcastic sense of humour, however that is a yoke I am willing to bear in the search for decent par-charred bread.

Very Happy ah the fundamental things of life : evenly toasted bread Confused
You could always put it under the grill of the cooker and toast it yourself??

Or you could get a toasting fork, take your bike into the garden and set it alight = nice big fire to toast your sliced white and a toasting fork to stop you from burning your fingers Wink

On serious note , I went to Asda and bought a cheap toaster there.
I’ve had it for about three years now and still going strong.
Hmmm, yum, my toast is all evenly toasted and buttery Thumbs Up

Standing over 2 slices of toast cooking is probably as bad for you as smoking a 1000 cigarettes a day in the middle of Bankok or something.

Here's one exactly like my little beauty. Except mines 15 years old, used very regularly throughout and a daily driver for
at least five of those years and it's still going strong. Laughing Wasn't especially expensive as I recall, just been no need
to replace it. I have a 15 year old Bosch fridge freezer though.

My Murphy Richards is on its way out too. I've had it for about 15 years. I need a two slot four slice toaster with variable size features, also a warmer rack. I can't find one that is the same as what I have now. I just want one like for like.

This is indeed the challenge. Go to amazon and read reviews and just about everyone has complaints about uneven toasting per side and poxy slice capacity.

Just switching on this new Breville I have and you can see the weedy glow of the inside (double sided) burner compared to the outer ones. How can it be so hard if this is your stock in trade?

In fact I do have a second (4 slice) Russel Hobbs but I junked it when the monkey metal lifters twisted and stuck at every opportunity. I think, as usual, its the curse of made in PRC or made somewehere where they give a shit.

Interesting, I just checked the base of my Tefal Avanti and its a 1300 watter. I now have crumbs everywhere but in the
name of science I'll allow it. What's the ballpark wattage of these newer, slower machines? Presumably there's an
EU imposed toaster maximum wattage. Specially as making two slices of toast indoors is now officially more harmful
than than breathing directly from a lorrys exhaust pipe for 45 minutes. Rolling Eyes

Toasters that don't toast, hoovers that don't suck. The EU - sending progress back to the stone age while
simultaneously importing millions of people ok with that kind of ideology. What's next? Planes that don't fly?

Ah I see what went wrong here, you got one of those Irish toasters. They are actually designed for cooking potatoes.

I haven't had a toaster for about six months now.
I'm starting to miss it.
But not enough to go out and spend over thirty quid on one.
If I get one, it will be a six quid Argos job.
Meantime, sticking it under the grill works fine.

What I'd really like is to have one of these again. Wub

My toaster got a reprieve last week. Wife said it had stopped working so I cleaned it out. Rolling Eyes Now works fine.

I would consider an overpriced Dualit as they seem to be completely rebuildable, toast well, and last decades.

I fuckin' burnt my arm on the grill making toast yesterday

Ow!
*sulks*

I need to get a toaster back in my kitchen.

At the moment, I'm vacillating between a toaster or a toastie pie machine, cos I fancy a bit of the old cheese and baked bean toastie. Wub

Rowlett. Can be rebuilt, customised, and all parts are available. It's the Enfield 500 of toasters.

And available in purple, to make a happy wife.

The original Dualit toaster, in four different sizes to suit a variety of needs, incorporates our trademark mechanical timer and ejector lever, with the ability to select only the slots you need to use. New Gen models offer additional defrost and bagel functions and the 6 slice workhorse can produce a staggering 130 rounds of toast every hour.

Shocked

I think I may invest in one. Laughing
