As above, now I have my cat-A licence I want to get the restrictor washers out ASAP.

As far as I know, the restrictor consists of 4 washers at the bottom of each carb. I wasn't given any parts back when I had it restricted, so once I get those out I should be good to go.

Or am I?

Is there more tinkering that needs to happen in the engine block itself? Keen to get my own hands dirty and do it myself, but don't want anything to go bang in the near future.

Please assume you're talking to someone who has next-to-no knowledge about internal combustion Laughing

It's easy, but you might need to balance the carbs afterwards. A garage can probably do that for you for about an hour's labour I reckon.

I derestricted my VFR400 back in about 1999. I undid the clamps from the carbs, levered them out of the rubbers, and then hooked out the restrictors with a screwdriver. It had loads of power afterwards but didn't idle very well and ran a bit rough. Carb balancing sorted it out.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Find out how it was restricted in the first place. If the bike is fairly modern the restriction could involve a different map for the fuel injection.

The old carb restrictors were just washers as Marje said, sometimes including bits to stop the carb piston rising too high. Modern ones are more likely to include, or only consist of, a different map.

If it's a carbed bike and was supplied restricted by Honda, it could have reduced effect (narrower) inlet manifold rubbers fitted which would need to be replaced. Mrs stinkwheels CB500 also had richer main jets as part of the restriction.
