Hello All

I hope you are all ok? Not the best for my first post, but I guess I have to start somewhere. rather than a lecture I went on what was as new a possible and what I could afford - I'm in the position I'm in now, but did hope it would all be well while gaining experience leading to my Mod 2.

I have recently noticed that I have a small fuel leak, which I've attached a photo of. I'm not sure what the clear bottle is for, fuel filter perhaps, but I'm guessing there must be a fracture in that where it joins the silicone hose. Would people tend to agree with that? I know it's hard to tell, but can add other photos if needed. And is this an easy thing to replace? Not really finding the right videos or manuals online, I'm probably not using the right terms.

I have called a few garages, but are busy for nearly 6 to 7 weeks. Not great for me, and considering I'm in central London (Zone 1) I didn't think I'd have an issue getting someone to look at it, but I'm wrong.

I just want to get out there and gain experience. Any help would be appreciated to get me back on my way. If anyone can help, lend a hand or knows a garage that could look at it, it would be appreciated.

Thank you and sorry for a request as my first post!

Yep looks like a cheap fuel filter. Find out what diameter the two end connectors are on the filter itself and buy one cheap off of ebay. Make sure you fit it the right way around, and make sure you pinch off the hose from the tank, or turn off the fuel tap if you have one.

If you're lucky you should be able to replace it in a few minutes and stop the leak. If not, it may be a split hose, but you can buy petrol resistant hose in various diameters in various lengths and diameters from ebay.

Hi

Yes , it's a fuel filter and there dead easy to change. Simply slide the clips off the raised section of pipe , and pull the pipe off the fitting on the filter. Replace is simply the reverse. They can be got at any car accessory shop for a couple of quid.

Looks nice.

The rubber hose is held on with a spring clip just under the white filter.

Either the hose has distorted under the clip, leaving a wrinkle that fuel can get out through since it no longer sits perfectly on the white plastic, or the hose has split, or the plastic filter has cracked.

If you switch the fuel off, you can pinch the ends of the clip together using pliers, and then slide it down still pinched over the bulge onto the length of the pipe, which will allow you to examine the joint more closely, possibly wiggling the hose off (some fuel will come out of the filter, catch it with rag or kitchen paper, no smoking etc.).

If the pipe's split, you may be able to trim some off the end and connect it all back up, it looks as though there's some "slack" that can be taken up in the pipe above the filter. If that's not possible (see how much "slack" there is first!), get a new bit of hose and fit it.

If the filter's cracked, get a new filter.

If the leak's not too bad you might be able to bodge it up temporarily using silicone self-amalgamating tape or something.

Would that in-line fuel filter be original and is it a fuel injected engine with a fuel pump (pressure) ????

Urg. It is indeed fuel-injected. However, is that pipe really at pump pressure?

You are right, it does have an external fuel pump and a filter on the inlet pipe.

Start easy and let this escalate.

I would open that springclip (thats squeezing the fcuk out of that hose) slide it down the hose a few inches/centimetres, trim the 'squeezed' bit off the hose using a sharp knife and refit the hose and clip to the filter.

I think the hose quality is the usual shite that Chinese use. They make stuff cheap by using cheap fcuking shite materials (They are shit at engineering. But can copy anything from just a picture. Shocked Very Happy )

Look for a better quality hose from a bike parts site. Silicone hose is superior to that rubbish they have used. You can email one of the online outfits and they will advise if they can supply.
You will need to measure the inside and outside diameters of your hose.
It looks waaay thicker than it has to be for this duty. COz they use shite, with no structural integrity, they have to beef everything up.
We see it in the Oil Field too where stuff is made massive to begin with. The chinese stuff is 1-1/2 times bigger again. Source of steel ores, manufacturing quality control, worker's skill.....
Oh fcuk. I forgot, you didn't come here for a lecture. Very Happy

Edit: I was using my Chinese PC to look at the pic. Smile

You don't have enough hose to trim....
You may have enough stretch on the upper section to let you trim the lower section though.

TLDRT Edit.
Get it to the dealer and jump up and down. Etc. etc. etc.

Thank you all. That's great, I've bought a filter so hoping I've got this right and this is the fault. Will look at the hoses and connection too at the same time.

Warranty. Most dealers won't do it because the bike is not from them, so I have to use the originating dealer - I can't do that as it's 150miles away. Anyway, lets see how I get on.

Cheers all for the help. Hoping I can get this done and get some miles done.

the law is the law no matter how far away the original dealer is, but i know what you mean. Modern fuels seem to eat some fuel pipe and even plastics.....

I'm back.....

So I've replaced the fuel filter, but now the bike wont start? I've tried putting the old fuel filter back too, but no change. I did recharge the battery as the bike has been sat for a while, but it's not that either.

Any ideas?

Thanks

It will have air in it , you will need to turn it over for a while or turn it on and off several times so the pump can prime the filter/ fuel system . Don't use silicone hose for petrol it expands like mad.
