Sup,

Anybody know of a good welder in the Croydon area that could repair an exhaust? Or anyone here think they could do it and maybe help me fit it as the collars on 2 of my header pipes have dissolved and I expect the studs are going to be in an equally bad way? Of course happy to pay a fair price. I emailed a place in Addington but got no response so assume they are not interested.

I got the exhaust off ebay and was meant to be in excellent condition with no previous repairs however ther is a crack on one original weld that goes 2/3 of the way round and a previous weld on the hanger looks to be blowing slightly.

Thanks in advance,

Mintah.

Try Surrey Performance Exhausts in Wallington, very good, I've used them a couple of times for bespoke (car) pipes, but they always seem to have a couple of bikes hanging around.

That may be one for the back burner - a few hit n miss reviews for that place.

You could braze it yourself. Use a mapp gas torch. You can buy brazing rods in halfords, or online.

I'm too far away to weld it for you but is that a stainless steel system? Looks brittle.

It is stainless and looks to be the weld that has failed as opposed to the exhaust itself.

I'm loathed to lob too much money at what is essentially a free exhaust only to then find out it hasn't worked and then have to buy brand new. That's why I was hoping there may be a bcf'er willing to have go for some beer tokens.

Another option is to see if it fails the mot and then see if my garage would be willing to weld and fit it.

I am braced that ultimately I need to just buy a new system and I'd hope it'd possibly be its last one as the bike is 22 years old.

I'd pitch-up at the door of a local welders and see if they's do it on a tea-break for 'a drink'.. If you can get some bracing on there as well all to the good.

For MOT Gun-gum, bean can and jubilee clips..

If Maidenhead isn't too far then I could do it for you for a 4-pack of Hobgoblin. Just the welding-up repair and not the fitting though.

A map torch will not get hot enough for a good braze, oxy acetylene is the hotter and smaller more concentrated flame, tip size dependant. Carburising flame remember even with flux.

what bike is it off please?

Thanks for the replies, it's for a 97 Cbr900.

Full delkivic system is around £300 by the looks of it (plus fitting as I foresee stud woes).

*edit* mot is this Monday and expires march 6th.

The zorst on my bike now is bodged (2 into 1 has repair tape and jubilee clips) so I'll see how that goes. It passed last year without even an advisory on the rotten header clamps as there is no gas leak and there still isn't but I'm kind of getting into the brace position that my luck has to run out at some point.

It is quite easy to braze using a carbon arc, flux and bronze rods. I bought one of these years ago, and they're very good (they run off an ordinary AC welder).

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Brazing-torch-for-arc-welder-/153388646774

That sort of torch is much more controllable than the ones with crosswise-mounted carbon rods. A welding helmet and dark welding lens, and covering up to avoid "sunburn" are vital.

Lots of uses around the home....

Here's one I did earlier.

Lots of sticking and spatter, because it's a very thin stainless aftermarket silencer welded on to a larger diameter, much thicker, mild steel original exhaust section. A higher voltage (I used SMAW) would have blown holes in the thinner stainless section. I used a very low voltage. This isn't a leak repair but an actual exhaust reconstruction. I ground it down on one side before respraying in black later - I didn't actually mount it to the bike like this as it was unsightly.

Realistically, your split in the weld is a normal thing because of different cooling rates to the centre and sides of a weld, and it would be easier for any pro welder to fix. It's not actually putting together mismatched pieces of metal using bead over bead, or bits of scrap metal. They shouldn't charge you more than about £20. A MIG welder can be dialled in very precisely and the repair will look perfect. Tin cans, exhaust putty, etc. is a road of frustration.

Thanks, I may well be in touch after the test on Monday. Would rusted studs be something you have the knack of dealing with too?
