Hi.
I have an aprilia pegaso 650 that's overheating while standing still.
red lights , traffic jams etc.
When running at full speed there's absolutely no problem.
is this a known problem with the pegaso? Any sollution?

Happy for anything constructive.
Thanx in advance.

Figge

Isn't the fan cutting in when the bike is stopped? Remember its hot at the moment and when it was this hot on my KLR the fan was always on in slow traffic.

First thing to do is take off the radiator cap (when the engine is cold) to make sure you've actually got coolent in there. Don't assume just because there is fluid in the expansion tank that there is any in the rest of the system Smile. Oh, and also check there is fluid in the expansion tank, I guess! Quickly look at all the rubber hoses, make sure none are kinked or collapsed, and look for signs of leakage (white furry stuff).

Next, I'd probably flush the whole system out and re-fill it. It's cheap and easy to do It will give you a good idea of what's going on by the state/amount of existing fluid. If you are lucky, it might just fix the problem.

After that, it's spanners, I'm afraid. You need to check:
Thermostat is working
Pump is pumping
Radiator isn't furred up.
You'll need a either a manual or a mechanic to do that, though.

finpos.

I realise that this reply is almost 13 years since the original post, but it might still be useful to someone:-

I had exactly the same problem on my recently purchased second-hand 650 Factory (2008). I ultimately discovered that the two small pipes to the fittings near the radiator filler cap had been fitted the wrong way round by the previous owner.

Consult piping diagrams on Google, but you need to ensure that the small pipe from the neck of the filler cap feeds into the bottom of the expansion vessel. With that confirmed, the other small pipe, from the fitting a few centimetres below that one, should feed the fuel pre-heater on the fuel injector housing.

If you get them the wrong way round, the cooling system cannot pressurise properly and, thus, the coolant will eventually boil away.

The reason the boiling off mainly happens on tick-over is because that is when the engine generally gets the hottest, with the bike at a standstill. With the bike being ridden at speed, the increased coolant flow and the radiator do their job of keeping the whole system sufficiently cool.

Could be a weak mixture if it’s a carb model.....caked up air filter which can lead to a lean runner and it will get hotter than a bike running with a normal mixture set up.

The opposite is true: A clogged air filter will give a richer mixture and the bike will run cooler and be significantly down on power.

A partially blocked JET would give a weaker mixture, which could possibly lead to overheating problems.
