Before I try and bleed the thing, is it likely to be better to take the brake caliper off and invert it to bleed?

in that situation I wouldnt even try, I'd reverse bleed with a syringe.

I would be inclined to drop the caliper off too, you cannot expect to get good results if the nipple is on the bottom of the cylinder, it's nuts!

Yes, take the caliper off, stick something between the pads and bleed it.

The fjr is the same, it’s never been a problem to bleed though.
Never needed to take it off, no need, as matey says you can always reverse bleed
