Bugging me for ages. All germ killing adverts domestos dettol etc all kill 99% of germs......all of the disinfectants claim this.

Serious question what germs survive these disinfectants and what can they do to us? Question aimed at any medical / lab Bcfer's.

My understanding is they basically kill everything, but they cannot claim 100% because it depends on usage, the size of the infestation/infection etc. Also hedging against some bacteria, virus or other microbe that does survive...

It's far better to kill 99% than 0%.

My GF is a nominal expert on biocides, but I suspect she'll end up supplying far more information than is really needed...

The manufacturer is legally covering their arse. They give themselves that 1% leeway so if you die from an infection you cant claim it was their fault as you had used their product and so should'nt be pushing up daisies.

That last one percent are the "hard as a woodpeckers lips" germs, they are bathing in disinfectant, sticking two fingers up and just waiting for their chance to crawl into your poorly defended fleshy body, where they will wreak untold havoc.

HTH.

Can I have your stuff when you're gone?

Some of them can go into a deep dormant state which is how they [might] have been able to arrive on earth from space.
In a domestic situation the survivors would likely be hiding in your imperfect kitchen surfaces e.g. knife scratch etc.

it is to legally cover their arse. I work in a lab and a standard bleach kills basically anything we work with including HIV, HepC etc however we have to use Virkon as this is "scientifically proven" through research to kill these viruses.

if you are using sodium hypochlorite above 5% I believe, it is going to kill pretty much everything, but bugs mutate, lay dormant etc so some may (highly unlikely) survive

Nothing is 100%, it can't be.

Also, worth a thought, our ability to see evolves with the technology we use. The smallest particle today might not be the one tomorrow.

99% would be an educated guess.

Quote from biocide expert:"The test is logarithmic, so it's impossible to achieve 100%. You can reach 99.999999 etc, but just down to the maths, you can't achieve 100%. On that basis it would be factually incorrect for them to claim it kills 100%, even though it probably does, near as."

I seem to remember a cleaning advert that used to claim.. kills all known germs.. Dead!

That leaves space for the unknowns and future discoveries.

Mathematical fact:
99.99999 recurring = 100

Kill them with fire instead! It fixed the Plague and I don't know any germs that can survive a naked flame in my noob levels of biological knowledge.

We use isopropyl alcohol at work for cleaning and sterilising parts and equipment, but I bet far greater harm comes to humans from regular exposure to alcohol, white spirit and thinners onto your hands and skin and through cuts and abrasions than you get from a few germs?

Pedant, She just meant a lot of 9's after the decimal point, but not recurring. I actually added that in to try to illustrate the point.

That was in the days before you could get sued for anything and everything.
How's that American getting on with suing his parents for being born without his consent?
