I've been advised by a local dog sitter/walker/trainer that diet plays a significant part in a dogs behaviour.
I've had a lot of fellow dog owners commenting on how they've never met a dog with so much energy as mine, one other Border Terrier owner laughed at how naughty she thought he was.
So, after a bit of researching it turns out I've been giving Ben the dogs equivalent of Macdonald's.
Asking for a specific recommendation isn't what I'm after as I realise different breeds may have different needs, although if you have an affinity with my situation, suggestions are most welcome.
I just wondered if anyone has modified their dogs behaviour using a change of diet.

I have three large dogs, one weighing in at around nine stones, and I can see behavioural changes in them after about three days of a diet change.

I now buy from Zooplus. They sell a range called Wolf of Wilderness which is really good quality and doesn't cost much more than the "Macdonalds" foods you mentioned. It's also significantly less than other premium dog food such as Lily's Kitchen.

Also beware of Amazon. It seems to be full of scammers at the moment who try to get the price of a pack of 6 tins and supply one by deliberate deception.

Zooplus again. I buy Royal Canin feed for my strapping mutt. It is a good feed with moderate energy production. My dog gets compliments on how well she looks almost every single day. I use the Maxi senior kibble but she has been on their puppy, then junior foods first.

A friend was giving his GSD working dog food thinking it was better for her. It made her hyper, she had so much energy. He did nothing but change it to a standard good quality food and she calmed right down.

As with kids, find one that has minimum additives/preservatives.

I used 'Symply old dog' food for my old chap, he thrived on it.

They do one specifically for small breeds.....

we have a black lab
Now labs are known for being food orientated and eating everything and anything they can get in their mouths (it doesn't necessarily need to be edible with some)
Ours on the other hand is raw fed and is still interested in our food but never steals never bin dives and doesn't pick up food outside

Raw feeding is good, little waste most of which is hard and easy to pick up Sick but you do need to do your research and make sure you provide the right mix for your dog

I'd second that as a Lab cross owner

Finding this interesting.

Never considered diet as a behavioural driver.

Got 2 large weims and they are affectionately named twatdog and shitface because of their ability to cause mess wherever they go. 🤣

With a human, best behaved dogs in the world - left on their own for 5 mins plus and it's a free for all 🤣

Currently on arden Grange sensitive large breed. Any thoughts on that?

It's never occurred to me before but I suppose there might be something in it.

I've never really been on the receiving end of dog naughtiness - apart from Max - who was a complete w@nker when I first met him.

But then he's a terrier (Irish), and I'd never had experience with terriers much before - so I thought it was just juvenile terrier naughtiness. His dad was quite frustrated with him but as I only see him two or three times a year, it seems to me that he's become better over time, so whether its progress with training, castration ( Crying or Very sad ) or just that he has my undivided attention and smooching the whole time I am there.

The whole time I have been minding him, he's always had the same food. I can't remember what, maybe James Wellbeloved... Thinking

Didn't know you had Weims Hawkeye. Mines half weim so I totally get what you mean about their capacity for mischief when unattended. Not gonna see mine for a while week while I'm away. Already miss her and I'm not even at my destination yet.

And yeah, Bakers isn't great. My mum feeds it to her dogs and won't be told there's far better food available.

We went through the joys of finding suitable for - mainly that he didn't actually stink on. We tried all the good stuff, JWB, Harrington(?) etc. but ended up settling on Pedigree dry for small dogs, because it's the only food we found that he doesn't piss from his arse on, or stinks by farting. He gets chicken and mince to supplement it, as well as carrots, which makes it easy to spot his landmines in the dark Laughing

Got one and thought "this is nice... Two will probably be even better"

To save anyone the same mistake, it isn't. 🤣

Only joking wouldn't swap em for anything, but whereas before I had one dog that was hyper then tired... Now when one is tired, the other ones hyper. 🤦‍♂️

No, me neither but apparently it's an early consideration for these dog behaviour bods.

I shall of course update the thread with any changes I see in my pooch.

I've also now bookmarked zooplus, as I usually use bitiba and they regularly go out of stock, so it's good to have another option!

Good thread! 👍

We started raw feeding with a rescue staffy bitch we had
She was a lovely little barrel who had been breed till she couldn't any more then chucked away Mad
When we got her she had several health issues which cost a couple of grand to get right
the one thing was her coat was very thin and her skin was rough and flaky
A Dog groomer we know who also shows GSD suggested raw food and she was like a young dog, coat cleared up and she had energy to enjoy walks and life in general so when we got the Lab after Misty passed we went straight to raw food

It really is. With my friends GSD you could actually see behavioural changes with a matter of a few days when changing foods.

Now obviously most dogs aren't going to be THAT obvious but you will easily see subtle changes.

Another thing to note, while the cheaper crap my have additives that set the dog off, some expensive good quality ones do to certain dogs as well. my old chap was never 'right' on JWB and that has a good reputation.

Gracies about 38kg at the moment. Shes been slimmed down in advance of our holiday so my dogsitter can spoil her with treats without her getting too fat. Shes half doberman too so very smart to go with her mischief. Dogsitters been in touch and she looks pretty chilled so thats a weight off my mind. First time abroad since we got her.

We just decided to knock foreign holidays on the head once we got them.

Off to Ireland this year, possibly Cornwall or Scotland next.
