1) A relative has a desktop GSM phone. This currently, by mistake, has a "Three" SIM in it, which only works on 3/4G, not 2G, which is all the phone can handle. However, it receives texts (it reckons it's on the Orange network!). How?

2) Can SIM cards still be bought in shops, for cash?

Yes, most of the networks will 'give' you a 'free' sim card if you load it with credit. I think they have something like a £5 minimum.

It will save a couple of days if I buy one in a shop and stick a tenner on it. Most calls are incoming, so £10 will last ages unless there's a "left off the hook" accident...

Hmm at what point did 3g/4g SIms not be backwarsd compatible with 2G ? They're all GSM right? Only '1G' was the older analogue system as far as I know.

As far as the Orange thing is concerned old phones only have firmware to identify old network names. If the network changed it's name it will use the old name for it.. probably.

Also any SIM you can now get will be (2G)/3G/4G I would think. No-one is going to supply a 2G only sim as they want you to sup-up all that luvvly data

3 do not support 2G at all. (as far as I know, they're the only network that doesn't support it.)

That seems to be correct. It's the service, not the SIM. I still don't know how SMS messages get through...

EDIT: When the phone's off, and and the "3" SIM put in, and the phone is switched on, it comes up with "Emergency" (only, I assume). Searching for networks via its menu results in "Searching... (time passes) ...incomplete". Then after a while, it says "Orange". Still can't call it though. Bizarre.

You can buy SIMs in shops. Generally they cost about 99p.

I thought anonymity might have been discouraged.

The best low-usage PAYG seems O2 Classic Pay As You Go
£0.99 (Tesco, probably other places too).

As Poundland is no longer a single price shop, it's nearly a reasonable question Very Happy

Supermarkets... corner shops... petrol stations... poundland... argos... you can PAYG sim cards from loads of places.

Or you can just order one for free from the internets.

And yet here we are, a couple of days later and you're still sim-card-less. Razz

Are you trying to pick an argument, green-ink style? If not, I refer you to my post of yesterday at 23:35.

The real travesty here is the desktop gsm phone, guessing this is for an elderly relative?

Yup. It's just an old-fashioned landline-sized mobile 'phone. Why's it a "travesty", I wonder?

Because it's shit, tethered and apparently only capable of 2G.

If said relative had taken the time to stay up to date or someone in the family had taken time to teach them they wouldn't be at a disadvantage using antiquated technology that is essentially hindering their capabilities to remain in contact with what I assume is their loved ones.

They make mobile phones specifically for the elderly, but I guess I don't understand peoples aversion to change.

You do you though.

I'll guess cos its plugged in you don't have to worry about battery life and there's no line rental either.
I'll assume it has nice big buttons and a simple-ish display and caller buttons too.
1 for fambly 2 for doctor 3 for betting shop 4 for crack dealer
and such

https://p.globalsources.com/IMAGES/PDT/B1157532265/Fixed-Wireless-Phone.jpg

Just had a brilliant idea!
They probably dont need lot of power so if you used a battery pack
you could carry about in a big pocket or bag and
then you could make and recieve calls wherever you are not just at home !
Brilliant eh?
Oh..
hang on...
ummm...
nah..
aww forget it.
