Can someone tell me what's involved when you take your bike for a service? I'd like to get as much of it done myself then get any remaining parts done by a professional. Such as valve clearances. All I really need is a checklist of all the things a full service would cover. Thumbs Up

I can get you a workshop service checksheet what we use at work if you like, but you'll have to wait a week or two because I'm off work sick at the mo.

To briefly summarise the main things are, change oil, change oil filter, clean or replace air filter, check spark plugs and replace if neccessary, check all electrics including charging system, check brake pads, check tyre wear and pressure, chain and sprocket condition and adjustment, chain lubrication, check all bearings for play (steering, front and rear wheel bearings, etc), check forks and seals, check rear suspension. That's covered the major things but obviously I can't remember everything because it's all wrote on a sheet at work and I am feeling ill at the mo.

Hope this helps.

Scooby I wonder if you could tell me how much a service is likely to cost for a 1989 TZR 125? I'm thinking of putting mine in tomorrow.

What sort of service?

When was it last serviced? It may need piston rings, etc if it's been a while without them.

If you're talking a standard service with no consumables needed, you're probably talking about £40-50. That's mostly labour, gearbox oil, plug, top up of 2 stroke, and sundries.

No idea when it was last serviced to be honest Confused
The service you describe there seems to be exactly what I've just done today, so there doesn't seem much point in that. So, if I take it in tomorrow, will he check it all over and see what's needed or just do the above?

Tell him what you've done and then he'll adjust your prce accordingly. He will probably get you to sign something stating that he hasn't carried out 'x' part of the service because you have said you've already done it, so if you get any problems resulting from that he won't be liable.

The things I listed are the only chargeable items. The labour covers checking things like your brakes and suspension, bearings, etc. Can you identify worn steering bearings? Check if there's play in the swingarm bearings or bushes? If you can you might as well service the bike yourself, then when you sell it sell it as a bike you've serviced yourself.
