NT650V backfiring on overrun?

Hi guys

I picked up a 2000 Honda NT650V Deauville cheap (been dropped). Minimum cosmetic damage (I think). I'm in the middle of getting the bits done that it needs in order to return a small profit (hopefully) but just wondering...

It sounds like it's backfiring sometimes but only ever on overrun. Usually gives a couple of bangs after lifting off the throttle. Was dropped on its left hand side but the exhaust is on its right hand side. It's a standard exhaust too so wouldn't really expect this to be a normal sound like to crackling and popping you sometimes get from a free-flow aftermarket exhaust. Any ideas what may be causing it to do this and whether it's anything to worry about?

Oh good, any excuse to put a new exhaust on a vehicle and I'm all over it. Thanks for your help!

Doesn't sound like it's blowing anywhere but yeah, just gives a couple of bangs on overrun.

tape a small strip of bog roll to the end of a long screwdriver, you can then fire it up and poke the screwdriver around the exhaust and visually see where its leaking from rather than burning yourself.
